FOTD 17-09-08 (The Dark One Rises [7])

FOTD -- September 17, 2008 (Rating 7) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: I never took the existence of the evil one very seriously, that is until behind me I heard FL exclaim, 'Oh my!', and saw the dark one himself leering from the screen. The scowling face is more noticeable at some distance from the screen. The prince of darkness, complete with his army of imps, came into being when I divided Z^2 by (Z^(-1.1)+0.5) or something like that, and set the bailout radius to a stingy 3. The resulting parent fractal is something I'm not going to try to describe, though it contains a Mandelbrot set stretched in the vertical direction, with two large semi-main buds attached to the single period-2 main bud. Today's scene, which is rota- ted 90 degrees, is located on the X-axis just west of the M-set. I named the image "The Dark One Rises". And the only place he could be rising from is the fiery pit. I rated the image at a 7, not because I admire the evil one, but because the image is a fractal, and a 7 is what I think such a fractal is worth. The calculation time of 1-1/3 minutes is brief, but not too brief for the duke of darkness to work his mischief. But all calculation may be avoided by going to the FOTD web site and viewing the finished image there. When Nicholas saw her bristled and growling in the window, he joined her, and together they chased the intruder away. I rewarded their bravery with an extra treat of tuna. They no longer get cheddar cheese, which their doctor said is not too good for cats. As for my day, it was close to average. And tomorrow promises to be the same. Houston report

Some of you know I live in Houston. You probably know more about what's going on here than I do, but just to let everyone know my wife and I are fine. Many trees down in the neighborhood, but we have no damage. We are all cooperating getting each other back on their feet. My wife has power at school, so I decided to shoot off this message via dialup on the last few watt-minutes of battery, then shee can charge up. I'm guessing we will be without power at least several more days. The upside is a blessed cool front rolled in after the hurricane, so life is pleasant without power, and will be for at least a few more days. Tim Wegner

FOTD 16-09-08 (Field of Fractals [5.5])

FOTD -- September 16, 2008 (Rating 5.5) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: The parent fractal of today's image is a routine Mandelbrot set that has been rotated about 180 degrees. But this M-set is anything but routine. To start, its formula is Z^(2.001)+C, and to finish, it has been calculated at a level 1.6 turns up the logarithmic hyper-ladder. Mandeloid fractals with fractional exponents of Z are usually intricately divided along the negative X-axis. In today's parent, the East Valley lies near the negative X-axis, so the East Valley area is where all the dividing takes place. The result is an image that bears no resemblance whatever to what one would expect in a scene from East Valley. In fact, the image bears no resemblance to anything in the classic M-set. It is something entirely new, almost like a fantastic flower garden. I named the image "Field of Fractals" and rated it a 5.5. I'm not totally satisfied with the coloring, so I couldn't rate it any higher. The calculation time of the included parameter file is 4-2/3 minutes, which is within reason. FOTD -- September 14, 15, 2005 (No Rating) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: NEW FORMULA ALERT! The DivideBrot5a formula is a new one. And today's FOTD is good for two days. It's hard to be a fractal visionary when you're looking at the stuff someone else threw out, or a lot of wannabe-country stuff such as feel-good slogans, teddy bears and scented candles. (I think they call this stuff 'primitives'.) Maybe I'm insensi- tive, but to keep FL happy on Saturday, we went down to an old factory in Duncanon, where they once made Lightning Guider sleds, to look at the stuff there. (I'm ashamed to admit that some of the stuff actually brought back pleasant old memories.) But regardless of how I felt about the expedition, when we got back to FC, it was after dark, and I had no time to do the FOTD for Sep 14. All is not lost however. The FOTD for September 14 is combined with the FOTD for the 15th, and is here now in its full glory. (No claims are made as to the amount of glory.) It's a scene in the fractal that results when Z^2 is divided by something like (Z^(-0.75)+1) with the bailout radius set to a chokingly small value of 2. Look at it and like it, or look and laugh, the image is very fast, calculating in 49 seconds. I named it "Eight Heptagons" for obvious reasons. I gave it no rating however, but if I had rated it, I would probably have given it a 5. FOTD 13-09-08 (Colorful Menagerie [5])

FOTD -- September 13, 2008 (Rating 5) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: What results when Z is subtracted from Z^3? A fractal that resembles a bloated honeybee mooning a sunflower, which, if it existed, would be located just beyond the right edge of the frame. In the center of this fractal, four very thin valleys form a spidery letter 'X'. Today's scene is located rather deep in the valley forming the northwest arm of this 'X'. I could rate the image no higher than a 5 because it doesn't appear to be worth the excessive calculation time of 24 minutes caused by the unusually large iteration count of the elements. The lowest count in the entire image appears in the upper left and lower right corners. It is over 2700. I did not use the logmap with this image however, since it squeezes the colors too close to the central minibrot. I named the image "Colorful_Menagerie" because I didn't want to mention the bee mooning the unseen sunflower. This leaves only one problem to be settled -- that of the too-long calculation time. An all day rain and temperature of 68F 20C made conditions less than ideal here at Fractal Central on Friday. FOTD 12-09-08 (The Low One Dances [7])

FOTD -- September 12, 2008 (Rating 7) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: I named today's image "The Low One Dances" for both mathematical and poetic reasons. To begin, the exponent of Z in today's formula is 1.067, certainly on the low side, and hardly an exponent expected to produce an interesting fractal. And the torpedo-shaped minibrot in today's image certainly has every reason to be dancing in triumph. The parent fractal is shaped somewhat like a letter 'A' lying on its right side, with today's tiny minibrot located near the egde of a debris field, some distance southwest of the main open area. The rating of a 7 indicates a typical FOTD of average quality. Due to the very large maxiter of 150,000, the calculation time is a rather slow 16 minutes, leaving it to the individual fractalist to decide whether to run the included parameter file or go to the FOTD web site at: <http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/FotD/FotD.html> and see the completed image there. Typical late-summer weather prevailed here at Fractal Central on Thursday. The thin clouds and temperature of 72F 22C were typical of this time of year. The fractal cats were more concerned with squirrels gathering nuts in the yard than the central Pennsylvania weather. In my department things progressed smoothly. FL's flowers have pretty much recovered from the beating they took in the storm on Tuesday morning. If all goes well, and I see no reason why it should not, the next FOTD will be posted in 24 hours, give or take a few. FOTD -- September 11, 2008 (Rating 6.5) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: The complex logarithm is multi-valued. To take advantage of this, the MandelbrotBC (Branch-Cut) formulas are supposed to make visible all the fractals that result from the infinity of values that may be given to the 'k' part of the logarithm. This situation exists because the formula for the complex logarithm is: (1/2)ln(x^2+y^2)+i(atan(y/x)+2kpi) where the value of 'k' may be given any value from plus-to-minus infinity. I am not sure if any of the MandelbrotBC formulas calculate the different values of 'k' correctly, or even if a correct way actually exists. In fact, I'm not even sure of where to look to find a correct way. The correct way, if one exists, would probably fall in the field of 'complex variables' or something like that, but information on 'complex variables' is not easy to find. One thing I am sure of however is that the MandelbrotBC formulas, with the various functions applied, make some incredible fractals, so who cares if the images are mathematically correct. Today's image lies in the Z^(1-2/3)+C Mandeloid as it appears 83 levels up the logarithmic ladder, with the 'floor' function in effect. At this level, the Mandeloid somewhat resembles a distorted Mandelbrot set standing on its nose. The scene is located deep in the chaos on the western shoreline of the large period-2 bud, which is actually shaped rather like a nose. The minibrot at the center of today's image suffers from an insufficient maxiter, but its surrounding pattern is unusually well-defined for a minibrot in this range. All things considered, I rated the image at a 6-1/2, not quite as high as I would have liked, but high enough to make the calculation worth the 4-1/2 minutes required. The name "Age of Iteration" has no significant meaning. I simply pulled it out of the air. FOTD -- September 10, 2008 (Rating 7) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Curiously enough, the parent fractal of today's image, which has perfect XY-axis symmetry, rather resembles a flying saucer bearing alien visitors from outer space. This explains why I named the image "Alien Visitation". I have no idea why the parent fractal should have this symmetry at the unlikely height of 71 floors up the logarithmic ladder, and then only when no function is applied. But I suspect that, like the 'cosxx' function of Fractint, using no function with the MandelbrotBC3 formula creates a serendipitous mistake. I also suspect that the fractals that result with this formula appear in a circular repeating series rather than an infinite line of always-new images. Today's scene is located very near the X-axis at the eastern edge of the main bay of its parent. Due to the Y-axis symmetry, a similar scene exists at the western edge of the bay. Most of the action in today's image consists of the 'fmod' inside fill. The rating of a 7 is conservative enough to be honest and liberal enough to be interesting. The calculation time of 7 minutes is a bit on the slow side, but fast enough so that no one will have an attack of acute impatience. The fractal cats weathered the storm under the bed; FL weathered the storm in the rear window, watching the flowers in her garden being flattened. I weathered the storm in the front window, enjoying the show. The rest of the day featured cloudy skies and a threat of more rain, which never developed, and a temperature of 75F 19C. With the big rush job just about wrapped up, things are return- ing to normal here at F.C. Though I had little time to write today's fractal discussion, the discussion for tomorrow's FOTD should be more elaborate. That next FOTD will be posted in 24 hours.
