I have upgraded my P3-733 / Win98SE system twice over the years; each new card performed worse with fractint (but better with games). The most recent was unusable in a win shell. The default image would draw but using any keys caused a lock-up. I finally put back in the original Hercules card (1999) and now fractint is cool again, but games suck. This is also the case with WinXP and current systems. There seems to be no rhyme or reason to it, at least that I can see. Some graphics cards work, some don't. Luck of the draw I guess. FOTD -- October 01, 2008 (Rating 6) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: There's not much time for a discussion today, once again due to FL's lingering fears of an impending apocalyptic economic armageddon. At least that's what I call the media hysteria that has FL so upset. And I would not be surprised if a fractal pattern were found in the irregular cycles of the economy that are causing so much excitement. A fractal pattern certainly does exist in today's image. In fact, that's all the image is. It shows a minibrot in the debris on the northeast shore line of the main bay of the Mandeloid fractal that results when the Z^(0.1) Mandeloid begins to morph into something unknown. The name "Empty Vastness" came about when I realized that the image evaporates as the bailout radius, defined by the setting of real(p2), is increased. The rating of a 6 might be a bit conservative, considering the serendipitous coloring. The calculation time of under 50 seconds is true on a P4-2000mhz machine booted with DOS 6.22 and running Fractint from a virtual RAM drive. The morning fog broke to cloudy skies by 10am Tuesday here at Fractal Central. A brief peek of sun in the early afternoon could hardly take the damp chill from the 68F 20C air. FOTD -- September 30, 2008 (No Rating) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's discussion will be non-existent, since I spent all afternoon trying to calm FL's financial fears. ("If we try to give 'everything' to everyone," I finally told her, "sooner or later we will run out of 'everything'.") Today's image shows an order-6 minibrot that lies in the East Valley of a fractal caught in the act of morphing from the Z^6 Mandeloid into the classic Mandelbrot set. Actually, despite its haste, the image is a better-than-expected example of an East Valley type spiral. I named it "Five Into Six" because the Mandeloids of order 6 have only 5 lobes. I gave it no rating because I put almost no effort into it. The calculation time of 6-3/4 minutes is a bit slow, but well within reason. FOTD -- September 29, 2008 (Rating ?) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: There is not much to be said about today's image, which is a variation of the three most recent images. It's all been said previously. Today I applied the 'zmag' inside fill to the same scene and came up with an image that reminds me of rough surf at the beach. When I named the image "The Great Waves", perhaps I was thinking of the famous Japanese tsunami print. In some ways the image seems good; in other ways it seems too much of a repeat. And the colors are too jumbled also. With such conflicting opinions I could not decide on a rating. I let it go with a question mark. The calculation time of just over 4 minutes will pass in a near instant when the image begins to unfold. And downloading the finished image from the FOTD web site at: <http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/FotD/FotD.html> is even faster. Heavy rain fell all Sunday morning here at Fractal Central, giving a two-day total of about 6 inches or 15cm, while the temperature hung around a very humid 70F 21C. I noticed a puddle of water leaking into the basement laundry room when I checked, but one puddle can't hope to compete with the floods that plagued old Fractal Central. I must call my sister back at old FC in Baltimore, to see how the old basement made out. Very heavy rain fell there also. The fractal cats ignored the rain and stretched out on their favorite rugs. When the last shower ended at 5pm, a brilliant double rainbow appeared in the east, ending the day in a blaze of glory and making up for all the rain. Except for the rain, my day went without incident. The FOTD was good enough to avoid disappointment. The next FOTD, hopefully an improved one, will be posted in 24 hours. . My understanding is that Vista is totally incompatible with fractint. Forget it. Windows XP however, is ok (sometimes). I have 2 WinXP systems, one is a screamer with fractint, the other is a pig. Go figure. I think it is the CPU (athlon better than intel) and graphics card, also the mobo chipset that makes the difference. Win9X is totally ok, you just want a good P2 or P3 system with at least 256K memory and a good graphics card. .

FOTD -- September 28, 2008 (Rating 7) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's fractured image is an excursion into yesterday's image, which itself is an excursion into the image of Sep 18. I named today's image "Fractured Rat's Nest". That's what the angular jumble of fractal debris reminds me of. I rated it at a 7 because of the surprisingly complex pattern themes scattered through it. The fractal action in today's image was achieved by applying the 'atan' inside fill to the original scene, which is a blank screen when rendered in the normal way. Most of the other inside fills do nothing with this image, but the 'zmag' fill works as well as the 'atan'. The FOTD for tomorrow will be a further zoom into today's scene, rendered with the 'zmag' option. The calculation time of 4-1/4 minutes is not as fast as some images, but still within reason. The ultimate in logical reason may be achieved by surfing to the FOTD web site at: <http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/FotD/FotD.html> and viewing the finished image there. Frequent heavy showers made Saturday a day that left much to be desired here at Fractal Central. But all was not lost, for the rains washed out the planned all-day antiquing trip, which gave me ample time to explore in the world of fractals, a world that could be almost as real as the 'real' world. Fractint's status

Greetings all! I've just subscribed to the list and am wondering what Fractint's status is as far as Windows Vista goes. I've watched the program's webpage over the years and there doesn't seem to have been much movement from V 20.0 for quite a while. I used earlier versions of Fractint quite a bit back in the day, when DOS was still a major player. I've not tried using the program at all under 'recent' (i.e., Win95/98, 2000, XP and now Vista). Is there a version that will work under Vista? I would really like to start using the software again! Thanks!! Bob Lester

I have changed the colors, rotated the frame, and increased the magnitude. The result is an image that in my opinion rates a 7. I named the image "All in the Details". I can give no logical reason for choosing such a name; I simply liked it. Like its September 18 parent, today's image consists totally of 'inside' stuff made visible by the 'atan' inside fill option, an option that usually creates so much chaos that I rarely use it. This option works quite well in today's image however. The calculation time of just over 4-1/4 minutes gives ample time to ponder the mysteries of the fractal universe while the image is rendering. FOTD -- September 26, 2009 (No Rating) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's not-quite-super image lies in the parent fractal that comes about when Z is combined with 10 parts of Z^(-7) and (C) is added. This parent fractal resembles a circle that is trying to morph into a Mandelbrot set. Off the screen to the west of the morphing circle lies a huge scalloped blob, with smaller blobs between it and the circle, all of this connected by a spider-web network. Today's scene, filled with blobs, lies in this network. I named the image "Lost in the Circle". I must have had a good reason for chosing this name. I gave it no rating because I neglected to give it the coloring work it deserves. The calculation time of 22 seconds needs no excuses. The calculation moves faster than light and as a result finishes before it starts. It will take slightly longer than this to go to the FOTD web site and view the image there. I began the day Thursday reading in SciAm magazine that the 'big bang' may be out, replaced by the 'big bounce'. When I mentioned it to FL, she made some casual comment about reality. I have forgotten the innocent comment, but the rambling line of thought it brought about is still going strong. Big Bang or Big Bounce? How do we even know what exists at the present time, much less what existed 13.7 billion years ago? And what of all the other strange stuff? What does existence mean? Does the supernatural exist or is it an impossible dream? Are fractals real or are they supernatural? The answer appears to depend on the definition of the word 'supernatural'. My view of the word 'supernatural', as well as the similar word 'paranormal', is that both words are merely wrong classifica- tions. Something truly supernatural or paranormal is impossible. Everything that exists must in some way be natural or normal. The difficulty arises because we have such a limited grasp of the full extent of the natural (normal) world. I strongly believe in the existence of many of the so-called supernatural or paranormal phenomena such as psychokinesis and ghosts haunting buildings, and (gasp) even conscious spirits of the dead. But I do not consider these things supernatural; I consider them to be fully natural things not yet understood and incorporated into the natural world. By contrast, I am sometimes called an Atheist because I doubt the existence of the familiar god-in-the-sky of conventional religion. To me, this god is as much a mental construct as are the various interpretations of the quantum phenomena. Yet I do believe in a universal creative power. If one wishes to call this power something more 'scientific' such as the energy of the vacuum, so be it. But to be considered the God of the universe, this power must be conscious. Actually, the problem is our limited concept of the extent of the natural world. Things that are considered supernatural in one century are well understood and considered perfectly natural in the broadened concept of the next century. And we will always have skeptics to guard us from excessive broadening. I'll only briefly mention the aliens from outer space who are supposed to be visiting us. Here I turn skeptic. An alien in a space ship is something I must see with my outer senses before I can take the claims seriously. Thickening clouds marred the sky here at Fractal Central on Thursday, but the temperature of 70F 21C was close to perfect. The fractal cats watched proudly from their window shelf all morning, satisfied that the seven stray cats that were hanging around yesterday have moved on for good. FOTD -- September 25, 2008 (No Rating) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Between reassuring FL that the end is not yet nigh, pondering the fourth dimension, and finishing an unexpectedly large pile of work, I had less time to devote to the FOTD on Wednesday than I would have liked. But all is not lost. FL is reassured for at least a day that the end is not yet here, and the work is behind me. As for the fourth dimension -- that continues to puzzle me. Some things supposedly possible in 4-D space are logically impossible. I read recently in a book of four-dimensional geometry that when a hypersphere is subject to double rotation and the two rota- tions are equal, then all points of the hypersphere except the single point at the center move in a circle. The puzzle is what happens to the points at the centers of rotation of the circles. Are these points moving in circles also? The description of double rotation, says that they must be. But if they are, then the points circling them are being carried along, and not moving in perfect circles at all. As I said above, it's logically impossible. But one thing certain is that the fourth dimension is fascinating. It's too bad that, even though my mind is capable of pondering 4-D, I'll never get to see it -- at least not in this world. I will get to see more fractals however. In fact, today's image is a grossly overblown sample of one. I named it "A Flawed Jewel" because I feel it has potential, but due to the lack of time I was unable to bring out its full luster. As it is, the colors are far too gaudy, so much so that I dared not give the image a rating. Most of the gaudiness was achieved by rendering the scene with the outside set to 'real' and the inside set to 'fmod' with a proximity of 0.75. A good part of the image consists of this glorified inside stuff. The little minibrot at the center suffers from an insufficient maxiter, a flaw that is easily remedied at the cost of a little slowdown by raising the maxiter to 3600. With the maxiter at 1800, the image calculates in 2-1/3 minutes. A maxiter of 3600 adds about one minute. All such problems may be eliminated however by surfing out to the FOTD web site at: <http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/FotD/FotD.html> and enjoying the already-calculated GIF image posted there. After the early morning fog cleared off, perfect early autumn weather prevailed here at Fractal Central on Wednesday. Total sun and a temperature of 75F 19C can hardly be surpassed. The fractal cats' thrill came in the afternoon, when seven, yes seven, half-grown cats appeared in the yard next door. A half hour later the seven cats were gone and the fractal cats had settled to sleep. As stated earlier, my day was quite busy. Tomorrow will likely be slower. The next FOTD will appear in 24 hours.
