FOTD -- October 07, 2002 (Rating 5) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: To produce today's fractal, I took Z^(-1.25) and subtracted Z^(-2.75) from it before adding 1/C. With the bailout radius set to 210, this formula draws a parent fractal with a spade- shaped bay whose point faces east. Though the bay is filled with various forms of fractal debris, little of interest lies in this debris. Today's scene is located just north of the eastern point of the parent fractal, where two lacy arms converge. When I saw the image, I was reminded of a monarch butterfly that I had noticed fluttering in the garden earlier in the day. I immediately named the picture "Monarch Butterfractal", and then rated the image an average 5. Like fractals, those butterflies have long been a puzzle to me. They appear every year in late summer and autumn, fluttering around the flowers, storing energy for their migration to the recently-discovered remote mountain valley in Mexico, where they spend the winter in a state of torpor. But how does a single butterfly survive a journey of nearly 5,000 kilometers? Not even considering the hazards along the way, the time needed to complete such a journey would far exceed the life span of a single butterfly. Perhaps the butterflies make the trip in the same manner humanity is supposed to explore interstellar space. The individuals who arrive at the destination are the remote descendants of those who set out on the journey. Or maybe the whole monarch migration story is as much a myth as the idea that humanity one day actually will reach the distant stars. Forgetting butterflies and space exploration, perhaps the best feature of today's image is its lightning speed. It renders in less than one minute on my tired old machine, even in single- pass mode. Fractint and Windows XP

Bill: Why don't you swap the "old" video card from your older PC and install it on your "new" PC? You might have to also transfer over the drivers, or download and install "new" XP drivers from the "old" OEMs website. Your problem my be due to the fact that your video card is of the "new" kind that no longer supports the "old style" Vesa video registers. Most of the "older" Nvidia TNT cards still support Vesa registers. The good news about the "older" video cards is that if you can find them they are usually a lot cheaper than the "newer" video cards. A good tip is to check with other members of the fractint list which cards still work with fractint. Some OEMs post the specs of their cards on their websites, so a good policy would be to check a card's specs before buying it. The thing to look for is VESA register support. FOTD -- October 06, 2002 (Rating 7) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: For some reason, I named today's fractal "Otherworldly Image". I forget the reason, but fractals are truly not of this world. How could they be when even the simple fractals I work with exist in four dimensions, and this 'real' world of ours is endowed with only three spatial dimensions? So the name is justified after all. The formula that created today's fractal adds together 8 parts of Z^(-1.3), 2 parts of Z^(-8.3), and one part of (1/C). The location of the image is in a Seahorse-Valley-like area of its multi-bayed parent. In this valley, the filaments extending from buds end in ring-shaped loops with various decorations and open areas along the loops. These ring-like features are very common in fractals that combine two negative powers of Z with the reciprocal of C. In the image, we are looking deep into one of the decorations in the interior of a ring. The ring theme infests the image, which is filled with rings and parts of rings. There are tiny rings at the peaks of the hills, and gigantic rings out beyond the borders of the image. I might have named the image "Ringworld" had that name not already been taken. After a bit of critical consideration, (I CAN think critically), I rated the image at an above-average 7. The coloring at least has somewhat of a theme, and the image is actually rather pleasant to look at. The 9-minute render time from the parameter file is a bit slow, but not beyond reason on a Sunday, the day set aside for fun and rest. The temperature reached 88F 31C, but drier air and a fresh breeze kept things within comfort. Approving of the conditions, the fractal cats spent several hours in the yard, behaving like the angels which they most certainly are not. It is now Sunday morning, and I've got to think of something to do this afternoon that will make the day at least slightly memorable. If I were to find the world's best fractal, that would do it, but if I did find the best fractal, how would I know it? What makes some fractals good and others not as good? If fractals had never been discovered (or invented?) would there still be good and less-good fractals? While I'm pondering these not-quite-monumental questions, I just might go out and have a bit of a good time. FOTD -- October 05, 2002 (Rating 5) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Sometimes, while discussing fractals, I remark that the image on the screen is but a slice through an abstract four-dimensional object. When I say this, the question is often asked, 'where is the fourth dimension?' I then reply by stating that the fourth dimension is sideways to the inside of solid objects, and of course, the person I am talking with remarks that such a direc- tion does not and cannot exist because there is no space for it. The real difficulty with the fourth, and all higher dimensions, is that we cannot visualize them. Early in life, we learn to decipher and organize our sensory input so that it forms in our minds the image a three-dimensional exterior world. The image works quite well because all people, (with the possible excep- tion of the insane), have formed the same image. That world might or might not resemble our mental images of it, but what if, perhaps with the aid of virtual-reality computers, a child in his formative years were fed images of a four-dimensional world. Could that child then grow to visualize four-dimensional space and all the figures that might exist in it? Maybe he could, maybe not. We'll never know because the experi- ment will never be done. But I can't help but wonder whether a three-dimensional reality actually exists 'out there' or whether we learn early in live to organize our mental impressions into a world of three dimensions, and then go on to invent a math- ematics that works with that three-dimensional image. I mention the fourth dimension because it is one of my favorite topics of contemplation when I settle into my ponder chair, and also because in the upcoming FOTD's I will often be discussing the fourth dimension. Today's image is part of a critical Mandel-plane of the four- dimensional julibrot that results when 1 part of Z^2.2, 2.2 parts of Z, and C are added and iterated. The two prominent spirals are impressive, and inspired the name "The Great Spirals". But it takes more than two spirals to make a great fractal, so I could rate the image no more than an average 5. With a render time of 13 minutes, the parameter file is slow. FOTD -- October 04, 2002 (Rating 5) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image pictures a midget that exists 2 turns down the infinite logarithmic spiral of the Z^1.618034 Mandeloid. Or maybe I should say 5.1416... turns down the spiral, because pi is considered ground level. Studying the midget in the image, I saw things such as an undersea creature swimming through the water, or a sprite floating blithely through the air. I finally chose the happy sprite and named the picture "Spritely Iterated." When it came time to rate the image, I tried to see a 6 or 7 rating. But try as I might, I could find nothing above average in the scene, and had to settle on a fully average rating of 5. Being an armchair philosopher who wonders what is real, (the objective universe is far too simple an answer), I found myself pondering the nature of fractals as I studied today's image. When the image of a fractal is on the screen, that image is objective, but what of the reality behind the image? The Mandelbrot set, for example, is not objective, because it has no physical existence, nor is it totally subjective, since pictures of it can be shared the same as any objective thing. I suppose fractals are best considered mathematical abstrac- tions. But they are not true abstractions in the sense that an attribute such as honor is. True abstractions such as honor cannot be pictured. Fractals might be an entirely new form of reality, or non-reality. I must do far more pondering on this fascinating topic. But regardless of what fractals turn out to be, there is an endless supply of them, and I'll continue search- ing for them for quite some time to come. Speaking of time, only 4 minutes of it are required to render today's image from the attached parameter file. FOTD -- October 03, 2002 (Rating 6) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: I do not usually put much effort into searching for Julia sets. It's not that I consider them less interesting, but rather that I spend most of my fractal time searching for quadratic midgets in fractals created by the MandelbrotMix4 formula. Occasionally however, I do venture into Julia territory, (as well as all the other territories that exist in the world of four dimensions). And of all the julia sets I have stumbled upon, none is more curious than the one in today's image. The julia object that fills today's image is truly indescrib- able. It might be some bizarre alien creature from outer space, or some weird heraldry design. Whatever else it resembles, the image is obviously full of the same railway-track filaments that appeared in the 2 most recent FOTD's, and it is these tracks that led to the name "Julia Railyard". At the two main branching points, as well as the smaller points, open rectangles appear. These are virtually perfect rectangles. I know of no more-perfect rectangles in all the world of fractals. In the past, I have posted several FOTD images of strange things that happen to these rectangles when the paramet- ers are changed even slightly, and the even stranger things that happen to the rectangles, as well as the entire Julia fractal, when the view is rotated in the fourth dimension. I have rated the picture a 6, mostly because I am familiar with the scene. If I had just discovered the image, I would have rated it a 7 or 8. No formula is included in the parameter file because it uses the built-in julzpower formula already in the Fractint program. The 1-1/2 minute render time at SF5 resolution is quite reason- able, but as always, the pre-rendered GIF image is available on the WWW at: <http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/FotD/FotD.html> and at: <http://sdboyd.dyndns.org/~sdboyd/fotd/index.html> The fractal weather Wednesday was a bit too warm to be ideal, especially for early October. The temperature of 88F 31C and hot sun kept the dynamic duo in the shade of the holly trees most of the afternoon. Only when the sun left the porch did they return to their porch chairs. And I've got a bit too much work ahead of me for my situation to be considered ideal. But a bit of effort applied in the right places can soon change that situation. Until I get started, I can't get finished however, so until tomorrow, take care, and the fourth dimension was here yesterday. That's not the reason why I suggested that you boot with a Dos or Win95/98 Floppy when trying to reconfigure a new Fractint.cfg file with the makefcfg.exe utility. Many Fractint users have complained that when run under either Win2000 or WinXP, makefcfg.exe might not see the Vesa registers of your video card. If makefcfg.exe can't see your video card's Vesa registers, then the fractint.cfg file won't be able to point Fractint.exe to your video card's Vesa registers. Booting from a Dos or Win95/98 Floppy will hopefully "trick" makefcfg.exe into seeing the vesa registers and it will write you a new frractint.cfg file. Then you can remove the floppy, reboot in Win2000/WinXP and hopefully Fractint will now "see" the Vesa registers of your video card. Then you can make & configure yourself a "Dos Box" to run Fractint.exe under Win2000/WinXP etc.... bessel functions

I received an email requesting that the complex bessel function be implemented in Fractint. I have a bunch of complex analysis and numerical analysis books I am checking. I also have Numerical Recipes in C, but that code is copyrighted, and also has a poor reputation. Does anyone have either a clear formulation suitable for implementation, or even better, an implementation to contribute? If so, let me know. A Mac program has implemented it. I have emailed the author, but of course I don't know if he'll be interested in contributing his implementation. FOTD -- October 02, 2002 (Rating 6) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Most sequels fall short of the standard set by the original. Today's FOTD fractal image is a sequel to yesterday's "Railyard" image. Whether it equals the worth of that image is up to the viewer to decide, but in my opinion, today's image falls a bit short of yesterday's. I therefore rated it a 6 -- still a bit above average, though not exceptional. I could have named today's image "Son of Railyard" or "Return of the Railyard", or perhaps something more sensational such as "Curse of the Railyard" or "The Railyard Rises Again". But I didn't. I finally decided on the simple descriptive title "Railyard-II" In today's image I subtracted 2Z from Z^2.001 instead of adding it. The parent fractal that results from this change is shifted in position, and now has X-axis symmetry, but it is otherwise little different from the parent of yesterday's image. As in yesterday's image, today's scene is located in the negative-stem area of the parent. I have yet to see a four-dimensional train running along the fractal rails, which twist and curve in 4-D space. As a matter of fact, I have yet to visualize 4-D space. Having firmly established a 3-D world image, I appear to be unable to do so, but despite the seeming impossibility, I never stop trying. And now I hear that perhaps 11 or even more dimensions might exist, all rolled up into tiny supersymmetric strings. (I wonder what they're made of.) It's all very interesting, but what chance do I, a mere human being, have of understanding the world that contains me. (Or is it I who contain the world?) Now that the FOTD is once again an every-day thing, I'll have more opportunity to speculate on the philofractal list about the nature of reality, and perhaps invent some fractal formulae which demonstrate that I am on the right track. About that FOTD CD, it's basically finished, but I want to include on it the FOTD's that will appear during the remainder of this year, so that the disk's contents will end at an obvious break point. The CD will be ready for distribution after the first of next year, and after that I will release a new FOTD CD at the start of every new year. I have not even begun to exhaust my enthusiasm for the FOTD. The parameter file runs in 9 minutes; the completed GIF image downloads in less than one minute. Running the parameter file is more fun; downloading from the web is more convenient. The choice is up to the reader.
