FOTD -- October 16, 2002 (Rating 7) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: The parent fractal of today's image is a drawn-out string of Mandeloid fractals much like the Hawaiian chain of volcanic islands. Today's image itself is located in a valley of the easternmost and not at all the largest of these Mandeloids. The other Mandeloids are all interesting, and may be visited in future FOTD excursions. The midget at the center of today's FOTD is located in a spiral, the edge of which is cut off by a discontinuity. In keeping with the cutoff theme, the large spiral surrounding the midget is also cut off. The most impressive thing in today's image is the unusually well defined area surrounding the midget. I have emphasized the definition of this area by the coloring I gave to it. The well-defined area reminds me of nothing that I can immediately recognize, yet it seems to be a something. I therefore named the picture "Mandelbrot Object". This name will suffice, though fractals are certainly not objects in the accepted sense of the word. Though I am fairly satisfied with today's image, the coloring still leaves a bit to be desired, especially the outer areas, where the bland beige fails to bring out the full potential of the scene. Also, the midget at the center suffers from too low a maxiter. Considering these shortcomings and the excessive render time of over 1 hour on my machine, I could rate the image no higher than a 7, which is actually quite good. Luckily, the completed image, if it is not already on the FOTD web sites, will soon be available there. FOTD 15-10-02 (Holy Fractal [8])

FOTD -- October 15, 2002 (Rating 8) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Things are getting even tenser here in the F.C. area, with another sniper shooting, the 11th, not too far (50 miles, 80km) away. At times like this, I could ramble on about the human condition, but I'll ramble on about fractals instead. Today's fractal is named "Holy Fractal". This is not because it is in some way connected with a religion, but rather because it is filled with holes. There are thousands of visible holes in the image, and an infinity of invisible holes. And when infinity is mentioned, thoughts of a Deity often arise, so perhaps the title is not as unlikely as first assumed. The scene is located in the East Valley area of a larger midget that exists in the edge chaos of an island that lies in the fractal created when some Z^(-0.008) is combined with Z^(-11) and (1/C) is added. The parent fractal, which is an exaggeration of yesterday's parent, is little more than an immense empty circle with a tiny bit of debris on the western shore. The most surprising thing about it is that, with an exponent of -0.008, it exists at all, but then lots can happen in 10,000 iterations. I have rated the image at an impressive 8. It might not actually be as good as the rating implies, but I like something about it, so the rating of 8 will remain. The 48-minute render time on my Pentium-I 200mhz machine can be reduced to 10 minutes or so on the fastest units. FOTD -- October 14, 2002 (Rating 6) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image has been named "What is it?". That is a question. The answer is that today's image is a picture of the midget I spoke of yesterday, which lies just beyond the southeast border of yesterday's "Coronal Globules" image. Curiously enough, since I have rotated the view 180 degrees, yesterday's scene now lies not northwest but southeast of today's. The midget in today's image is one of the more chaotic I have come upon in my travels through the world of fractals. It is quite difficult to find any definite theme that runs throughout the scene. Some areas consist of fractal material so finely ground that it resembles sand. Other areas consist of relatively simple spirals. But the coloring shows that a broad overall pattern does exist around the midget, and that this broad pattern consists of the usual 2,4,8... series of elements. One of the powers of Z in the generating formula is -0.05, which defines a value so close to unity that it might be expected to have little effect on the finished fractal. But the maxiter of today's image is 6000, which gives plenty of iterations in which that tiny departure from unity can build up to a significant change in the overall appearance of the image. Today's image might rate closer to a 5 than a 6. The image is a bit too disorganized to be above average, and it also lacks a theme. But when rating it, I decided to do myself a favor. I'm harsh enough on my fractals as it is. The attached parameter file requires 38 minutes of rendering time on my aging P200 machine. I wonder if it would render in 1/10th the time on a state-of-the-art P4-2000mhz machine. Somehow I doubt it. I suspect that, just as the number of cycles per second is going up in every new generation of Pentium processors, the amount of work that is being done in each cycle is going down. I have just purchased a new Pentium 4, 1.5 gHz, with the XP Home Edition. Not being able to load the driver for my scanner (new driver versions for XP are not available and will not be), I asked my supplier to install Win98 as a second OS on the system. That should also take care of any potential problems of running Fractint on this new machine. This double OS approach is even suggested on Microsoft's site for users who still want to run older programs which cannot be compatible with XP even with its "compatibility wizard" feature. During the few hours that I managed to 'play' with this new toy, I tried running one of my semi-useless programs performing a calculation and recording the time it takes. This new one took TWICE AS LONG as my current P3-550e! I'm anxious to test if this is due to the XP or the P4. I also intend to test how Fractint speed will be affected. FOTD -- October 13, 2002 (Rating 6) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: As viewers and readers of the FOTD know, most of my FOTD images are centered on a quadratic midget that lies in a critical plane of a fractal created by adding two different powers of Z to either C or 1/C. The important word here is 'most'. Occasionally, as in yesterday's 'antlers' image, which showed the entire chaotic part of the fractal, there is no midget to be seen. Today's image is a return to yesterday's fractal. I returned today to search for midgets, and found one that looks as though it is about to vanish beyond the bailout radius. Searching the surroundings of this midget, I found a spot where the entire character of the area suffers a sudden change, and did further searching there. I soon found a midget of apparently average quality. But as I was working with this sub-midget, trying to find something where little existed, the surroundings caught my attention. As I discovered, the interest in this area lies not in the midget, but in its surroundings. I settled on an area to the northwest of the midget, colored it with the < tdis > option, and named the result "Coronal Globules". One glance at the image will reveal why I gave it that name. The original midget is not lost however. It lies a short distance southeast of today's image, and well might appear as a FOTD in the near future. For those (if any) who want to see the rejected midget at once, an outzoom will reveal the exact location, and the midget can then be zoomed in upon. I have rated today's image at a 6, which is a little above average. The render time of 23 minutes is a little below average however. But relief in the form of a pre-rendered image file ready for download is available on the FOTD web sites at: <http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/FotD/FotD.html> and at: <http://sdboyd.dyndns.org/~sdboyd/fotd/index.html> If the image is not quite worth 23 minutes of rendering, it is certainly worth a minute or two of download time. The weather Saturday here at Fractal Central was an improvement over the day before, but the temperature of 68F 20C accompanied by fog, drizzle, and most importantly, wet grass, kept the dynamic fractal cats once again confined to the indoors, where their paws and whiskers remained dry. Today appears to be a repeat, so I suspect that before the day is finished, I'll be breaking out a tuna treat for the housebound duo. I'm now going to try to do as little work as possible for the rest of the day, before the more serious work arrives tomorrow. Just to add another wrinkle to what Tony says, I was able to run makecfg and a fractint.cfg file was successfully created. But I still can't get the resolutions above 640 x 480 to work. So it's obviously no guarantee. Bill

FOTD -- October 12, 2002 (Rating 5) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's fractal takes around 0.7 part of Z^(-0.05) and adds 1/10th as much Z^(-11) to it before adding 1/C. The resulting fractal is a grossly bloated empty circle on the verge of turning inside-out, with a bit of chaos on its western shore. Today's image focuses on this chaos, which is filled with curiously twisted quadratic midgets. I may investigate these midgets further in the days to come. Today however, I have concentrated on the entire area of chaos. At first glance, today's scene appears to have L-R symmetry. But the symmetry is an illusion. A second glance will reveal small differences in the left and right halves of the picture. Today's image is rotated 90 degrees and stretched in its vertical direction. This stretching of the chaos distorts it into something that vaguely resembles a rack of moose antlers. When searching for fractal names, if I see even the slightest resemblance to something, that is enough to supply a name. In today's case, it justified the name "Antlers in Sight". The background of the image consists of bof60 inside fill; the ground at the bottom is normal outside material. The whole thing is of average FOTD quality, and in fact, much like the images I produced so many of in the early FOTD's. I rated it at an average 5. The 2-1/2 minute render time is reasonable for such an average image, and that time can be reduced by 40 percent by changing the passes from 1 to g. But even 1-1/2 minutes is a bit longer than would be required to download the completed image from: <http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/FotD/FotD.html> or from: <http://sdboyd.dyndns.org/~sdboyd/fotd/index.html> The temperature Friday here at F.C. reached 68F 20C, but the weather was terrible. It poured rain all day, accumulating over 4 inches (or 10cm) by evening. The cats of the fractal variety sat all day on their shelves by the windows, watching the rain and sulking because they could not go out. A treat of tuna in the evening cheered them somewhat, but could not come close to making up for the day of forced confinement. It's still cloudy this morning, though no rain is falling. As soon as the grass dries, the dynamic duo will be unleashed into the yard. (Dynamic fractal cats do not like their paws wet.) As for me, I'm going to take it as slow as possible and enjoy the temporary lull in the work load as much as possible. But unless the world ends, I'll return tomorrow with a new and hopefully better fractal. Until then, take care, and relax. FOTD -- October 11, 2002 (Rating 6) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's FOTD image is named "Complexity" not because it was created with complex numbers, but rather because it is a very complex image. Much of the complexity has been achieved by rendering the scene with the outside set to <atan> and the inside set to <bof61>. These settings are a departure from my usual equal-iteration bands on the outside and a blank black on the inside. The parent fractal takes 0.0145 part of Z^(11) and adds 1.6095 parts of (1/Z) to it before adding (1/C). The resulting fractal appears as a somewhat distorted M-set rotated 180 degrees. Today's scene is located in some unlikely chaos on a filament of a bud in the East Valley area of the parent, which in today's case is located on the west side of the main bay. In addition to the unusual inside and outside fills in today's image, the bailout also plays a part in the final appearance. I have set the bailout radius to 2.076, which is just above the point where the scene goes totally blank. Unlike fractals with negative exponents of Z, fractals with positive exponents do not evaporate when the bailout is increased. They do change however as the bailout is reduced to near the cutoff point, though to a lesser degree. To see the unchanged version, reset the imag(p3) parameter to zero and recalculate the image. I was about to toss aside today's image with a rating of an average 5, but then I stepped back from the screen and noticed that, from a distance, the image looks surprisingly good. I finally settled on a rating of 6. The render time of 8 minutes from the parameter file is a bit slow. It rained steadily from dawn until midnight, with a temperature around 61F 16C. This kept the cats confined to the indoors and resulted in them being quite unhappy through most of the day. In the evening, I gave them a treat of turkey, which lightened their moods -- at least a bit. For a change, I have very little to do today, except search for fractals. Since it's still raining, that's probably what I'll do. Until tomorrow, take care, and keep your spirits up -- if you can find them that is.
