Compiling with NCURSES made disk video work properly, thanks. xfractint doesn't find its files

When I build xfractint to a non-standard install location (my home directory) and then run it from someplace other than the install location, it complains about not being able to find files: Fractint found the following problems when parsing commands: Can't find map=maps/default.map, please check sstools.ini Can't find ifsfile=ifs/fractint.ifs, please check sstools.ini Can't find parmfile=pars/fractint.par, please check sstools.ini Can't find lfile=lsystem/fractint.l, please check sstools.ini Can't find formulafile=formulas/fractint.frm, please check sstools.ini If I run the executable with the current directory set to the install location (i.e. the directory that contains the subdirs maps, ifs, etc.), then it proceeds without these complaints. -- "The Direct3D Graphics Pipeline" -- DirectX 9 draft available for download <http://www.xmission.com/~legalize/book/download/index.html> Legalize Adulthood! <http://blogs.xmission.com/legalize/>

fractint regression tests

I've been using FitNesse at work. <http://www.fitnesse.org> Fitnesse captures acceptance tests as tables on wiki page. The information in the table is used to load some code and execute it against the data in the table. Matching expectations are colored green in the table and mismatched expectations are colored red. Even though the fractint code base is difficult to unit test, you could easily make a regression suite using FitNesse so that you can identify when changes to fractint cause it to render parameter sets differently. You generate a reference image using a known good implementation and store that reference image in subversion, along with the fitnesse wiki. Then you create a page in the fitnesse wiki that contains information like: parameter file, parameter set name, and matching? (true/false). Add a bunch of rows into a table for those three items and find the reference image based on the parameter file and parameter set name and you're good to go. DivideBrot5 status

Tim, I've gotten the floating point version of DivideBrot5 to work in both Fractint and Xfractint. The bf math also works. bn math does not work. Along the way several functions that hadn't been used before in Xfractint were fixed for both the fp and bn math. Also fixed the bn math version of manzpower. Manzpower now works with some small artifacts appearing in the center of lake(s). The artifacts go away when the intlength is increased to 4 (from 2). I'll change the default to 4. The only thing left is to fix DivideBrot5 with the bn math. Jonathan

atan2_bf() problem

Tim, It appears that atan2_bf() in bigflt.c isn't working correctly. This affects cmplxlog_bf() and thus ComplexPower_bf() in fractalb.c. This can be seen by starting up the manzpower fractal type and then switching to arbitrary precision math using debug=3200. I found this while I was coding the dividebrot5 fractal. In the case of the dividebrot5 fractal, Fractint locks up. With the manzpower fractal, an image is generated, but not the correct one. Jonathan

Athlon woes

I built a computer last year using an Athlon with a Gigabyte motherboard. I had troubles with Fractint - with any SVGA mode the computer would hang after the completion of the image. I always assumed this was an Windows XP issue. Today I tried Fractint with freedos on the same computer, with the same results. So apparently it's an incompatability bgetween fractint and my compuiter. Truecolor, 320x200, diskvideo, and even tweaked modes work. SCGA modes fail, and only after the image completes. This behavior appears to have nothing to do with recent versions. Has anyone else had trouble with Athlon? Hmm, maybe I need to look at bios settings. Tim
