I think you'll find that CDs (as in normally produced music cds) are pressed (rather than burnt) with the dips imprinted onto the thicker clear plastic layer. Then a reflective silver layer is added on top to enhance reading. Then a laquer is added on top of that to protect the silver layer. Then finally the label (artists name, etc) is printed on top. Anyone whos got Orbital's fantactic 'The Altogether' DVD can watch this being done in one variation of their videos. Howver I've never seen a product that will repair the silver side of a CD. Only repairing the read/clear side.

The information is, in any case, recorded on the plastic so, in theory, if anyone knows of any kits to repair CDs, repainting the plastic with silver should make them work again... anyone tried this? can anyone recommend any good kits??
You got that a little backwards. :)
The data is encoded on the silver (compare to a CDR, burned compared to empty, assuming you have a burner) so patching the silver won't do anything.
There are kits which will repair the plastic if it gets scratched, tho. When the disc is scratched deep enough the laser gets reflected away from the silver layer it's trying to read. The kit fills in the crack with clear poxy or something or other which allows the laser to pass thru making the disc readable again. Cant recommend any as I haven't scratched a disc since the late 80s, but I have used the stuff with success. :)
As far as your CD rot goes, I'd suggest making CDR copies asap. I really should do this with my KLF discs. None are rotting, but are of the type that do.
