Re: why "bookshelf" is a piece of shit (and other thoughts)
Worse than that were the hackneyed montages of New York. How many times have we those? If I want to see montages of New York, I'll watch a Spike Lee or Woody Allen film. Also, the "abstract" montages with the file cards were annoying and confusing. I didn't know why they were there. So maybe, the director wasn't the best speaker for the candids, but those were two grave directorial missteps. Her choice of music and footage were very good, however. Saved the movie for me. Zorn could be nothing be a huge nerd. He helps others embrace their inner nerd.
Now, for the poo poo -
I hated the director. I wanted to slap her. She was irritating, creepy, and made the whole thing feel so contrived. I also hated - HATED - the staged/re-enacted crap and the fake voiceover work that filled the film. It was all supposed to sound "candid," but just sounded incredibly fake and unconvincing. The worst was when Zorn "woke her up early in the moning" with a phone call, when it was obvious that the entire thing was staged and created using voicovers and editing in later footage of Zorn on the phone with someone else. Yuck!
