I woke up this morning hearing the sad news of Sam Phillips' death. As some of you know on this list - I sort of just got started on hearing the Sun stuff. As of now I have heard almost everything - except for the black artists and I believe there is also a collection out there focusing on Women artists on Sun. It's fascinating that Sun Records was basically a small operation - and yet they produced such a powerful sound and how it affected pop culture. -- Tosh Berman TamTam Books http://www.tamtambooks.com

The Sun female singers collection is fascinating (waiting to find it used, personally). Do you have all that unreleased jerry lee stuff? What a genius. Not having the black artists puts you at a disadvantage, because SP's taste and judgement for blues was better than his ear for country, and on par with his radar for rockabilly. Find "When It ains It Really Pours" by Bill The Kid Emerson or the early Howlin' Wolf stuff. A world without Sam Phillips is just strange to me. he was always there somehow. Go figure. sh
