John Gordon said: "whenever i tell people i'm a saxophonist the first thing they ask is " do you like kenny g?". fucking a what a lame ass question to ask." There's worse, believe me. When a jazz critic was recently talking to Mr. G about Charlie Parker, the eminent saxophonist insisted that the reason CP got the name "Yardbird" was because he made sounds like a bird on his saxophone. Hmmph. Isn't that what the critics used to say about Eric Dolphy? Dave
I thought the Dolphy mention was because he had actually -- and I remember him discussing this in an interview -- recorded some birdcalls, slowed them down, and transcribed them. skip h
That's my favorite response to being a saxophonist. I also enjoy well meaning family members (extended, I mean, as I've already beat it into the immediate that I don't like Kenny G) giving me Kenny G CDs because he's a saxophonist..."I know you would just love it!" Interesting assumption, that I would love any saxophonist just by the sheer grace of them being a saxophonist. I'm sorry that he is the representation of all saxophonists for the general public, this makes me sad. On Dolphy: I seem to remember reading that he used to enjoy playing to the birds (i.e. emulating them). Hello, ....can't stand the G man myself, but whenever I think of him, I think of the late Hal Russell. On his CD "Hal's Bells" there is a cut titled "Kenny G" and the notes say this: "This is the one the NRG Ensemble refused to play. 'They don't like Kenny G, so they don't like the piece' reports Hal. 'A lot of sax players hate his sound, but I think it's kind of, uh, interesting. Plus he's the only person to have put an instrumental in the Top 40 in recent memory and you have to respect him for that.' Hal reflects momentarily. 'Well, you don't HAVE to.'" Don't have to is right. I remain... Makes you nostalgiac for Chuck mangione, who at least could play really well. skip h _______________________________________________ zorn-list mailing list zorn-list@mailman.xmission.com To UNSUBSCRIBE or Change Your Subscription Options, go to the webpage below http://mailman.xmission.com/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/zorn-list
