Fennesz/Grubbs Recs/Ribot y los Cubanos Postizos + Joe Bataan
Hi there, I know you guys will point me to the appropiate direction with Christian Fennesz and David Grubbs. I've heard some stuff from both and they sounded pretty good, but I couldn't really identify those recordings. Any good starters? Is Fennesz as interesting as they depict him or is it just some kind of annoying O'Rourke-like-hype?! I thank you in advance. Totally unrelated, last Friday I attended a show by Ribot's Prosthetic Cubans plus Joe Bataan, about who I inquired several days ago here on the list. I was wondering if somebody else has seen the Cubanos recently and what your thoughts are. I couldn't believe what I was seeing (in the most negative terms). The lineup has changed considerably, with Brad Jones on bass, EJ Rodriguez on drums, some Latin percussionist, Curtis Fowlkes and some (unknown to me) lady on trombone and Ribot. The whole thing seems to have turned into an extremely "for the fun of it"-thing. Of course, there's nothing wrong about it, unless you caught them live four or five years ago with the original lineup of Anthony Coleman, Roberto J. Rodriguez, etc, minus brasses. That was for me the real deal. After four or five songs, quite unremarkable, Joe Bataan, his wife and his daughter came up onstage and the thing turned into Joe Batan & Family plus backing band. The guy's OK, he's got a good voice, he's a lot of fun and he knows how to heat up the crowds, but again, that wasn't the Prosthetic Cubans I/we expected -I saw the faces of the people and it was very easy to make distinctions between newcomers and puzzled non-newcomers. As if that weren't enough, they played in the famous... I mean, infamous Forum de las Culturas in Barcelona, an awful place dominated by concrete, water, bad & expensive food, speculation, senseless shows, fake pan-culturalism, far too long walks to anywhere you want to go, etc... All in all, a forgettable night. I know some other listers were there on Friday and Saturday. I'd be very curious to know their impressions. I thank you in advance. from what i heard, fennesz is not the electronic musician, who develops his own software to get a unique sound, but takes big commercial sequencers, so i'm not sure, how flexible he is in improvising ... but he does (as found on his collaborations with polwechsel or keith rowe). he definitely is one of the very interesting eletronic musicians, who really knows how to use his software to create the sound he wants to get... ... the polwechsel / fennesz is a really beautiful recording (one of the most interesting recordings for me for the last years), it's improvised ... if you are interested in his solo works, check out hotel parallel or venice...
n.p: Rowe/Müller/Sugimoto "The World Turned Upside Down" (Erswhile) beautiful recording ;-)

I'm really fond of the Fennesz "Plays" CD single, and it's a cheap place to start as well - conceptually interesting and sonically fun "covers" of "Paint It Black" and "Don't Cry (Put Your Head on My Shoulder)". My favorite record he's on is MIMEO + John Tilbury's "Hands of Caravaggio," though he's but a cog in that wheel. The Polwechsel + Fennesz CD on Erstwhile is good & grows on me with repeated listens. "Endless Summer" is good, too, post-"Loveless" soundscapes. Grubbs is on several records by other people that I'm fond of - RLW and Tony Conrad in particular - but I have yet to enjoy him solo. Gastr del Sol were OK, but never excited me much & the JO'R association would poison it for you. -Chris At 08:08 AM 7/5/04, Efrén del Valle wrote:
