Hi everyone on the list last Sunday I went to Quarrata Italy to see new Dave Douglas septet playing at Teatro Nazionale. The show was great. Dave was in wonderful mouth shape and inspiration. I havent heard yet Freak In but I think the set was entirely taken from the work. Jamie Saft electric piano texture was simply excellent. Ikue Mori noise disturbances added the right extra eerie smell to the most linear passages. The rhythmic section was just fine. Never heard of Seamus Blake and the guy just kicks! Great unisons with Dave and a couple of breathtaking solos. A bit overwhelming for my tastes the guitar artistry of Mr Gilmore but the guy works really well. Dave had some sincere and very touching words of sympathy for the Florence balcony exposure of Rainbow Peace Flags and asked for the deepest commitment for the anti war campaign. I saw his show on Friday in Katowice (same place Zorn was in few months ago), and I must say, this is the end of my fascination of Dave Douglas. Don't get me wrong, I have ALL his records (but not Freak In), I started to listen to jazz after Masada and In Our Lifetime. But this stuff... I don't mind the funky stuff, but the semi-acoustic guitar pseudo-flamenco jazz fusion stuff was a crap. Pat Metheny can play something like that. It's smooth jazz. Not a real stuff. Music to seduce an innocent gir/boy by - yack! It was boring. And awfully sweet sometimes. I'm also supprised about everybody's enthusiasm for the "electronic" stuff from Ikue Mori and Saft. This was a child's play comparing to what's happening in electronics these days. Some nice, light "cosmic" sounds, nothing innovative. Dave is a talented composer and musician, no question, he can produce a "good" music (from arrangement view point etc), but we went into arena which is totally artificial to me... Regards Artur
well, i have to confess im not the largest zorn fan but i was blown away by one of the masada discs i heard. it was a quartet of him and dave douglas and two other gents. cant remmeber the title, those sessions all have similar covers and theres so many. but the session was high intensity free jazz which i dig. will anyone recommend their favorite masada disc to me? thanks! chad
Hi Chad... I have many, but not all of the Masada releases. The one I listen to most often is "Live in Sevilla". I think this CD is worth every penny for the opening track alone. I also remember being into some of the stuff on "Five" (the Avant series). For some reason I couldn't really get into the "Masada Strings" material. Hope this helps. patRice np: The Pixies, At the BBC nr: Michael Moore, Stupid White Men __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
