Hey folks, Probably a bit early for this, but does anyone know of any Zorn-related or similar artists who have tours planned in Europe in the middle of the year? I'm planning to be there July-August, wouldn't mind catching some interesting music... Also, any thoughts on the latest Dave Douglas 'Strange Liberation' (i.e. the second quintet album, with Bill Frisell guesting on some tracks)? From the little I've listened to it, seems like it's a solid album, but I must admit I'm tiring a bit of Dave's current jazz/Miles/Blue Note thing - looking forward to hearing something new. As for the Frisell guest-spot, it seems like it should be a perfect match, but to me the results aren't quite so convincing - eg. 'The Frisell Dream' sounded far better when I saw the Quintet live a little while ago... but hey, I've only heard good things about this album so maybe it's just me! Julian.
You can find few July dates of Marc Ribot and Uri Caine in Europe on www.ejn.it/saudades/concerts.htm and few more dates of Dave Douglas On July in Europe on his website: www.davedouglas.com. FWIW, I feel he does the 'jazz/miles/blue note thing' (particularly the mid-late-60's miles thing) better on 'strange liberation' than on 'the infinite'. As for frisell, he fits in better than I expected - when I've heard him guest (e.g., with zony mash, or with masada), he often seems hesitant and not really integrated - but in this case he fits in nicely. The interplay between Caine on fender rhodes and frisell is nice, given that the two could have easily interfered with one another. Potter is strong as usual. As for 'the frisell dream', i heard the quartet play it in april 1999, so it was nice to see it finally show up on an album, and with none other than frisell participating. The two versions (quartet vs. sextet) are signifcantly different to discourage comparison for me. Overall, this is probably my favorite Douglas album since the first 'charms of the night sky' recording. cheers, whit np - stereolab, 'margarine eclipse' On Thu, 12 Feb 2004, Julian wrote:

To me "The Infinite" is an extremely boring album. I also almost fell asleep during the quintet's performance in which they presented these tunes. I guess everyone's noticed he's alternating commercial/straightforward records with more personal, risky projects since he signed for BMG/RCA on a 50/50 ratio: "Witness"/"The Infinite"; "Freak In"/"Strange Liberation". A smart strategy. Best, Efrén del Valle As for frisell, he fits in better than I
