Say friends, I have to say that I just watched the 1965 (I think) Bollywood film Gumnaam and am looking for recommendations for the over-the-top Busby Berkeley-isms of 60's Bollywood. Gumnaam's famous for that opening scene in Ghost World, but the movie has four other great song and dance scenes, including a dream sequence with a feller in a beatle wig and a hitler mustache dancing among easter island heads and more I can't begin to describe, a great frankie and annette type hoedown on the beach and a finale with two drunk gals singing while lurching around and hiccuping. In short, it's great, and I want more great vintage bollywood moments. Most of the old dvd's are cheap (12-13 bux) on the web. If you've got recommendations, I'd like to see them. I hope this isn't the pinnacle. Yer'n, Matt
If you're in the US Turner Classic Movies will run a Bollywood series in June. The schedule may have some last minute additions but currently includes the classic "curry Western" Sholay and several others from the 50s to 2002. If you're looking for DVD recommendations try Khal Nayak, the gangster film Satya (only one musical number though), Dil Se or the Seven Samurai remake China-Gate. It's been my experience that clerks in Indian video stores are more than willing to help customers unfamiliar with the movies so just ask. Lang
