First impressions on "Filmworks XII"
Hi everyone, I bought ZornÂs ÂFilmworks XII a couple of days ago and IÂm really enjoying it. Maybe itÂs not specially surprising or groundbreaking, but the music in there is absolutely beautiful. The resources that Zorn has used here are still reminiscent of what he has been doing lately, at times reminding me of his work in ÂIAO (SaftÂs wurlitzer might have a lot do to with this), at others the score for ÂIn the Mirror of Maya Deren and above all, ÂFilmworks VIIIÂ, in which he already used Min-Xiao FengÂs pipa as a representation of the East-West link. So, in conclusion, the results are not that innovative, but certainly a good example of this newfound Âsoft side. The groups that he has assembled for this outing are really engaging. As someone said before, RibotÂs playing on acoustic guitar in conjunction with the pipa is just superb. Maybe not Âthe best Ribot but thereÂs still some good soloing. Baptista just does his thing but he starts sounding a bit predictable to me (did I say Âa bitÂ?). The highlight of the album is, imho, the Shaolin documentary by far. There are some Morricone echoes (track- #7), a Chinese flavour throughout (pretty obvious, sorry) and at least three diferrent takes of a bossa theme that really grabbed my attention. I was actually expecting more of that cello/voice score that closes the album. Of course, Friedlander is as good as usual. And I would have never related the first 6 tracks (corresponding to the dance score) to the minimalistic aesthetics, to tell you the truth. IÂd suggest you to think of ÂFilmworks X to get a more similar picture. Maybe no one will tear their hair at this, but I found it a great manifestation of this more Âeasyly recognizable Zorn side.
