Re: Cecil Vs. the Stones (wa SY:murraystreet)
Hello.
Well, depends, doesn't it. What if that Dave Douglas album was with Cibo Matto?
i think the avant-garde community is enough behind cibo matto that that woudn't be much of a challenge.
I'm happy to hear that, beacuse that means that the "avant" scene is not totally dead and defined. At least it means something totally different to you and me. I don't see most of the "avant" scene dancing to the happy bubblegum pop of Cibo Matto.
But a Krall or a Monheit -- someone to whom the avant-garde community is dismissive and hateful -- and to really play correct in the context would constitute "selling out" amongst a bunch of people who judge these things.
But didn't he already sell out then by playing with Pat Metheny? Oh wait, sorry, that was Ornette. Sorry, my argument is dead. _________________________________________________________________ MSN Photos is the easiest way to share and print your photos: http://photos.msn.com/support/worldwide.aspx

They get lots of cred around the Zorn-ites, you must admit. Don't care much for them myself. I'm more for Shonen Knife. I do however think that the avant scene is largely codified, at least with regards to jazz. It seems eclectic at the outset, but, as you dig into it, you find out that Wynton Marsalis could release an all-free duet album with Elliot Sharp, and would still be denied access.

It was ironic how Ornette got killed in some quarters for doing an album with Metheny while most Metheny fans hated the album anyway. sh
