This is of course a reissue of the famous BYG LP (from late '60s). Does anybody know if the record was also reissued (LP) on Get Back and Charly? Patrice.
I'm positive that I've seen the Braxton on vinyl (at Tower!), but I held out for the CD, and now that it's out, I'm holding out for the next Universal label sale so I can get it for $7 or $8. If it was on an indie, I'd pop for full price (as I did with the Sharrock and Silva BYG things on Sunspots), but a major can afford me the damn discount. You probably wouldn't have seen the CD listed by Forced Exposure because it's not like Universal is promoting the Fuel 2000 reissues. Did you see mention of their releases by Dewey Redman or Dollar Brand & Gato Barbieri anywhere? Bruce will probably list the Braxton sooner or later... I know he's carrying them. I thought the Silva was surprisingly varied and often quite brilliant, BTW. Listened to all two-and-a-quarter hours last night. The Sharrock is the lease-breaker it was always reputed to be. Glad to have it; not sure I'll go back to it much. But that's true of 'Black Woman,' too. Speaking of which, if there are any diligent archivists or Silva freaks out there: I noted that there are two musicians on the disc who are not credited in the listings. One, a pianist with the initials 'BF,' I'd figured to be Bobby Few (the rest of Lacy's then-quintet is on the session), and that was confirmed by the annoucements at the end. But can anyone confirm whether the bassist with the initials 'BG' is BYG house bassman Beb Guerin? That's all I can come up with, unless Barry Guy was also lurking about. Should be Beb Guerin. One of the best free bass player in France. He sadly shorten his life at its peak :-(. Patrice.
Based on circumstance, that would have been my guess. I've admired Guerin's work on a bunch of BYG things. Would you mind enlightening me as to what the rest of your message refers? Did he take his own life, was he another drug casualty, or something else entirely? Fuel 2000 is a subsidiary of Varese Sarabande, one of the independent labels that Universal distributes. I'm pretty certain that their lack of promotion is due to a lack of resources, not major label indifference. A large part of the Fuel method of operation is to sub-license things from European labels like Charly and issue them in the States. This is usually done without a lot of hype - unlike Verve, which Universal owns, I doubt that you'll see adds in DownBeat for Fuel's re-issues. That said, Fuel is indeed issuing the BYG/Actuel catalog in the states. The Braxton is at least the 8th release in the series. In addition to Steve's mentions above they've also released discs by Sun Ra, Archie Shepp and The Art Ensemble Of Chicago, Don Cherry and Max Roach. The next re-issue is Sunny Murray's _Sunshine & An Even Break (Never Give A Sucker)_ which comes out 07/16. Full disclosure: I work for Universal. That said, I'd be happy to send out a list of what Fuel has re-issued so far and keep people up to date with releases if anyone's interested. Regards, Paul
