Hi, I got some new Tzadik stuff this morning. Some days ago someone asked if the Zorn/Frith duo was what you'd expect from these two, and as someone said earlier, it is. It's basically noisy improvisations with some quiet moments thrown in for good measure, but basically it's a sonic attack of noise and extended techniques. It sounds as great as one might expect. The Hemophiliac show also sounds pretty great, better than the limited edition album, imho. Of course, it doesn't differ too much in terms of musical directions, but it's much more cohesive than the expensive edition, I think. This is just a first impression, having listened to each twice so far, but besides the Locus Solus volume, these two are the most appealing of the series to me, even if the String Trio was finally a great release after so much arguing here. Forthcoming releases are Masada Quartet, The Classic Guide to Strategy (fear!), Game Pieces (generically, don't know more) and the Leo Smith & Susie Ibarra/Zorn duos, according to the OBI. I'm currently listening to the Jacom do Bandolim tribute for the second time and it's really beautiful and engaging. It somehow compares to the music of Villalobos in how joyful and simple (in its best sense) it sounds. So I'd dare to say that those who enjoyed Baptista's take on the latter will enjoy this one a lot. After the Bolan & Argov albums I had lowered my expectations with these series but the bar is up there again. Really gorgeous and tasteful.
