the idea isn't to select the best records, or my favorites, or even to be representative, but just to select the things that will regularly make me happy walking the streets of manhattan (for example, erstwhile discs would make little sense since street noise would overpower them).
Kurt, I have a first generation iPod, which I bought two years ago, and while it only has five gigs, it works well in walks around Seoul, and no you don't have to forego Erstwhile stuff with the pod. In fact, about 90% of what I have on mine is EAI and it accompanies me on my strolls around town, but you should pick the right stuff. This year, Bits, Bots, and Signs is a regular soundtrack, as is Temporary Contemporary. Those are two of my favorites with the iPod. I also like the first and more recent ISO. Anything with Gunter Muller works well on the pod, including Poire Z. Lately, I've been listening to Ticklish as well as the studio track .tint from the Amplify box, which sounds really great on the pod. Since I also use my pod for working out, I've found that you need to keep some music on it with beats, and it helps to have playlists for that activity. This year for me it's been mostly Arovane, Pinhas/Dantec's Le Pli, Asana 3, and Godflesh. I also keep Merzbow and Kevin Drumm on for drowning out the outside noise. One title by each. On thing I've found necessary is to always have a seventies era Miles Davis set on the pod for Saturday walks to the coffee house. For a long time, it was the Complete Bitches Brew and On the Corner. Right now, Jack Johnson box. You should always have at least one Miles thing on the pod at all times. You can rotate it every six months or so. Hope that helps.
