i'm interessted in getting a better understanding of what's out there regarding Tzadik's Composer Series. i only heard Mike Patton's "Pranzo Oltranzista" and i really enjoy it. so, i'm wondering if there's more contemporary music like this out on the label?

I think there's nothing similar to "Pranzo Oltranzista" on the Composer Series or even Tzadik. However, this work seemed largerly influenced by Zorn's "Elegy" although the latter is much, much better, imho. I've been buying almost everything from the Tzadik label over the years and these are only some of my personal faves from the Composer Series: - JZ "The Book of Heads"; "Duras: Duchamp"; "The String Quartets"; "Love, Madness & Mysticism" - Eyvind Kang "7 Nades"; "Theater of Mineral NADES"; "The Story of Iceland" - David Slusser "Delight at the End of the Tunnel" - Fred Frith "Pacifica" - Ikue Mori "One Hundred Aspects of the Moon" - Susie Ibarra "Flower After Flower" - Wadada Leo Smith "Reflectability" - Ned Rothenberg "Ghost Stories" - José Maceda "Gongs and Bamboo" - Bobby Previte "The 23 Constellations of Joan Miró" These are some of them which I play really often and they probably have little or nothing to do with "Pranzo...". In fact, it's almost the "easy listening" stuff! The series are very diversified and you can find anything from a sax quartet by Fred Frith to a drum machine solo album by Ikue Mori to a Luc Ferrari musique concrete recording, so the best possible advise is jump into the pool and you'll discover great stuff. However, you could also find material of interest in the Archival, Film Music and New Japan sections, that's for sure.
