anyone have/heard this? http://tzadik.com/CDSections/NewJapan/ayuo_hiromi.html i loved her stuff with Kronos for Zorn's "Forbidden Fruit". i have a tape of her solo stuff too - daggy, cheesy 80's J-Pop. i wonder what this is like? Andrew
anyone have/heard this? http://tzadik.com/CDSections/NewJapan/ayuo_hiromi.html i loved her stuff with Kronos for Zorn's "Forbidden Fruit". i have a tape of her solo stuff too - daggy, cheesy 80's J-Pop. i wonder what this is like? i'm listening to it right now (it's a work assignment!) and i love what i've heard so far. most of it is just ohta hiromi on wonderful vocals and ayuo overdubbing multiple guitars (acoustic, electric, wah wah) with some other instruments periodically added to the mix, but predominantly just voice and guitars. i really don't know how to classify it. obviously, the vocals are in japanese (her voice is fantastic) and some of the tunes have asian elements, but the general lack of asian instruments and focus on electric and acoustic guitars keeps it more western, almost rock/folk-rock-y at times. then there's the 'sitar-guitar' which adds another dimension to it. these are very raw first impressions, but so far i think it's truly excellent. and i wouldn't say that about many of the more recent tzadik releases i've heard. sean

Maybe, but how many labels release that amount of material on a monthly basis? Among such variety, I'm sure there's something for everyone and last year left us some great stuff: Adachi Tomomi, Zorn's "Chimeras" and "Filmworks XIV", Ribot, Hemphill, Chien-Yin Chen, Kayo Dot, ... and 2004 looks all the more promising! If you look at it in perspective, the overal quality is excellent, sometimes superb. And speaking of Tzadik, the new Fujii/Yoshida is really good. I thought it might pale in comparison with the live recording on Victo, but the album is full of energy. They definitely lean more towards the Ruins league, but that even makes it more amazing. Frith's "Eye to Ear II" is also very good, although more difficult a listening than the previous volume. As the obi reads, it's about sound collages and it's sometimes a bit difficult to focus your attention on the constant changes of direction, but it sounds great after a first listen. is Tzadik releasing too much, just for the sake of it? the quotes like "pushing the boundaries" & "most interesting/unique compositions/songs" & "latest, most unique band to come form Underground Tokyo" in the album blurbs on the site/catalogues, don't hold true when I've had a listen.... I think they're just releasing too much, should hold back a bit me thinks..... save some $$$ seems kinda the 'same-old, same-old', with the exception of a few, of course... just my 2c :) Andrew np: Praxis - Transmutation Live

In that case maybe it's better to look at it more objectively: While it may not push any envelopes for you, it probably does for others. Perhaps you're too used to the stuff Tzadik is putting out. I've been getting their material for years and it's becoming harder and harder to be amazed by it, but still there are things that I find engaging there every month, although I'm not excessively hooked up by the January releases, to be honest.
