hi all, last time I asked about SY I had no idea where to start. Now with 4 albums under my belt, each one very different, I am at a loss as to where to probe next. Getting suggestions from others only makes me question their taste in music, the amazon reviews dont help either because every album is someones favorite. My favorite so far is Experimental Jet Set, its raw, tuneful, noisey, shronky, dynamic sound. Murray street is great really opened me up to the SY sound, the noisy segments are really powerful, solid songs, great instrumentals, a lot of variety. After getting hooked with murray street I could finally appreciate Daydream Nation for its classic SY sound. While I was listening to ozzy, acdc and quiet riot I should have been listening to SY. Lastly is EVOL, I like this album, but I am not in love with it like the others, its still growing on me...
From this point do I check out Sister? Dirty? Washing Machine? NYC Ghosts and Flowers? Any other suggestions?

hi jason well evol is my all time favorite but "sister" is a close second. i highly recommend that one. side note on that, byron coley's yod label put out a live sy cd of that whole album performed live. i aint heard it but im sure its killer. "washing machine" id like to hear again, cause i sold my vinyl copy cause i didnt like it. i have a feeling id really like the record now. also, their fourth sy experimental cd with takahisa kosugi is great. oh yeah, "bad moon rising" is cool too. n.p. half japanese "our solar system"
even if maybe their early works are not your cuppa, strongly recommend: Bad Moon Rising Daydream Nation Sister other records worth checking are: Sonic Death (audio collage recorded live between 1981 and 1983) Confusion Is Sex i do like NYC Ghosts & Flowers and Dirty, but not nearly as much as their earlier work. nothing beats "expressway to yr skull" as far as songs go. :) --dk On Mon, 10 Mar 2003, jason tors wrote:

Yes. Beautiful, wonderful nature. Hear it sing to us: *snap* Yes. natURE.
In case the responses haven't already told you this, if you ask 5 SY fans, you'll get 5 different answers. I'll add to the mess: Based on yr love of "Murray Street" and "Daydream Nation," I think you'd probably enjoy "Dirty" - I think it's too long, but it does have some great jammy songs. And I think you'd be well-served in checking "Sister" out, one of my favorite records period & probably the closest to "Jet Set" soundwise. "Washing Machine" is OK, though it really suffers from their make-up-the-lyrics-at-the-last-minute technique. "Goo" never sticks out in my mind as a favorite, but fortunately it's the one SY record I have on CD & so I can skip over stinkers like "My Friend Goo." I think "Bad Moon Rising" is fantastic, but it's less rockin', so you might wanna hold off on that one for a while. "Confusion is Sex" is another one I'd save for dessert, and "Sonic Death" is lo-fi live "Confusion"-era stuff, for completists only. The SYR series records were aptly dissed by my friend Sue as "releasing their practices," again more for completists though they have their moments. "Goodbye 20th Century" is pretty good, but that's 20th-c. classical pieces & it sounds like you're after rockin' stuff. At 09:56 AM 3/10/2003 -0800, jason tors wrote:
