Primitive Rock Duos Was Re Jim O'Rourke/SY
The opening act for SY was this band of guitar and drums that seem all so common nowadays. This band was devoid of energy the drummer droned forgettable lyrics whilst beating quarter notes on the drum. Her partner strummed out uninteresting guitar chords--she did nothing of note on the guitar. Many of these bands have this back to basics mentality that is tiring to me. What gives? There is this band that recorded an entire album of noisy garage rock in Bb minor with just guitar and drums. They took away their only way to make their songs interesting, changing keys! The whole album sounded like the same song repeating; thankfully it was short. Even White Stripes (the best of the crop), start to sound repetitive. I don't understand this trend of guitar/drum duos that have a completely blase attitude and simple rock songs. The lack of instrumentation, variety, and energy makes this incredibly boring to me. Am I not alone? Can some one explain the attraction? Zach
I think a lot of it has to do with staying current with the cool bands coming out. The stripes did it, and its statisfying for about 5 listens then it gets old. I think so much of that back to basics thing has to do with whats cool and different. As a listener, being on the forefront of what new&different music is coming out. Isnt it so much better to know a band before everyone else, doesnt it make you that much more hip to say yea Ive been listening to them before they were cool?
