Are there any (free)jazz harp players anyone could mention to me? The only thing that comes close to my mind is Zeena Parkins, but she dosent really do jazz projects. The idea of a harp as an essential instrument in a jazz composition or improvisation sounds rather intriguing to me. I think Alice Coltrane has occasioned to play the harp. This is quite possibly enough to get me laughed off of the list, but I've always been fond of super-New-Agey harpist Kim Robertson... some of her earlier albums (with stay-away titles like "Water Spirit" and "Wind Shadows") have some fairly decent 15th- and 16th-century tunes that I love to death. Her stuff isn't even remotely jazz-ish, but... um... yeah.

I don't have any info available right now, but I'm sure you can find something on the European Improvisation website or maybe on that of labels like Emanem, through which he's published as both sideman and leader, if my memory serves me. The Wire has covered his stuff in several occassions and mostly with positive reviews. Davies who is Welsh has played with a variety of minimalist free music types such as reddist John Butcher, cellist Mark Wastell and pianist Chris Burn etc. etc. He has just put out a solo disc called Trem on the Confront label. Cooper-Moore plays a hoe-handle harp, which is a home-made, slavery days version of the harp The only other free jazz harpist of note is Phil Cohran who played "space harp" on many of Sun Ra's Chicago recordings. To add to the Harp discussion, I saw Davis play harp with Company Week at the Tonic last year (I think it was) and he had all manner of implements that he'd rub against the strings, tibetan bowls, what looked like a large mushroom, small hand drums, paper, etc. Very out...Very nice... that was the same concert that I actually witnessed a duet between a tap dancer and a sampler. The thought of it almost made me question my faith in new music, until it got REALLY GREAT. I only want to add my admiration to Rhodri Davies, I see him last year with other improvisers, and was wonderful, really hypnotic sound, playing with arco and a lot of things through the strings like a "prepared harp" and more things like someone said before. He has played with the London Improvers orchestra too. Recently I've heard a wonderful duo with John Butcher at emanem, and i highly reccommend it. (this cd contains a duo with Butcher and Derek Bailey too).
