Can anyone explain the social dynamics on exhibitition last nigt at the Bimhuis, by Frisell and friends jamming along with smiles while simultaneously on stage their disenfranchised miserable Senegalese bandmate taps along perfunctorily and meaninglessly on his djembe? The joke was if we had a videocamera it would have been the best thing for black liberty since Rodney King. puzzled...
Hi - For those who are curious, i gather that Koendogg is referring to Sidiki Camara's role in Frisell's 'intercontinental band' (although Camara is from Mali, which I'm assuming is not the same as Senegal, so maybe there's a new percussionist on tour). In short, Camara apparently doesn't do much of anything except hammer out the same beat, with little or no variation, for long jammy tune after long jammy tune (minus small breaks to play a bossa nova courtesy of Vinicius Cantuária's presence in the band). At least that's what i've experienced. Not what you'd expect from a percussionist with Camara's credentials, and it does not make one want to run out and investigate his work. But then that's the way frisell has been structuring his music for some time now - although in this case i'm not sure Camara adds much to the overall flow, and one might perceive the role Frisell has given him as a bit of an insult to his talents. When I saw him, he didn't look miserable so much as stoic or bored. It reminds me slightly of Wollesen's role in Frisell's band back when he first took the drumming chair - he was more restrained than he is now (although he is still much more restrained in frisell's group than in, say, Sex Mob). Maybe Camara will stretch out some as time goes on (although they've been playing together for over a year, i think). A duet between Camara and Christos Govetas (the oud player) might be interesting! Rumour has it a studio recording of this (i.e. frisell's) band is already done and in the can... Apologies to Koendogg if I misinterpreted what he was referring to.
