Hi, After reading a review of a Keiji Haino 5-hour concert in Tokyo on the February issue of The Wire one cannot help but being really intrigued about this guy. I just own his trio recording with Joey Baron and Greg Cohen on Avant, "Just a Trial. More than This" but I suspect that this material has nothing to do with his usual stuff being it much darker. I've also listened to some random Fushisutsa and his solo effort on Tzadik (terrifying, btw). Any recommendations will be welcome. Haino's got a ton of recordings out there, as you've probably realized. A few high points, in my humble opinion: Fushitsusha: Both of the "Double Live" CDs on PSF are excellent, particularly PSF 15-16. Being live recordings, they're a tad murky, but not too bad. The Tokuma label put out several CDs that are beautifully recorded, though the performances are a tad sterile IMO. I have yet to hear the recent duo CD. Haino solo: "Nijiumu," on PSF, is fantastic, if rather harrowing - not to be confused with Nijiumu's "Era of Sad Wings," which I think is an ensemble recording & is a lot more comfortable to listen to, sort of in the darkly relaxing vein of Nurse With Wound's "Soliloquy for Lilith." "The Book of 'Eternity Set Aflame' " CD, on Forced Exposure, has some particularly raging solo guitar freakouts, which Bruce Russell aptly described as sounding like "an entire string quartet run through a fuzzbox." Miscellaneous: He plays on Faust's "Rien," which I quite like. The Gerry Miles CD w/ Alan Licht, Melissa Weaver, and Connie Burg is a fine non-nasty outing w/ Haino on vox. The Musica Transonic w/ Haino CD is less than the sum of its parts, too bad. At 07:27 PM 7/29/2002 +0200, Efrén del Valle wrote:
