Sonic Youth vs. The Beatles
Actually, growing up when I did, in the first great spate of 80's independent labels and gig networks, made Sonic Youth comparable to the Beatles forme. "Death Valley '89" was the song that drove me to pick up the guitar. Nothing against the Beatles, they wrote many great songs, but they don't mean near as much to me as SY. Most of you folks perhaps did not come up during this time frame I am describing, and possibly cannot understand this, but I am a "avant-guitarist" because of Thurston and Lee, not because of Burt Bacaharch or McCartney/Lennon. That's exactly what I meant when I mentioned the generational factor in relation to appreciating Burt Bacharach or Brian Wilson as groundbreakers. Although SY has been my favorite band since the first time I played one of their records, I also think that the Beatles discography is one of the most cohesive in pop history, there's an extremly high quality-level throughout. I can't think of a single Beatles album I'd regard less than excellent, although my particular interest in them begins with "Rubber Soul". You can't say the same about SY, whose albums aren't what you'd call timeless. Listening to "Evol" or "Confusion is Sex" now is a completely different experience than it was in the early eighties. While "Abbey Road" stands the test of time, I'm not sure you can say the same about "Daydream Nation". As far as I'm concerned, Jim O'Rourke is one of the most overrated musicians around, at least as a composer. If I must choose something worthy out of his recordings I can only think of "Halfway to a Threeway" and, unfortunately, it's an EP. Bad sign.
