I ranted:
but then again no-one here (Steve Smith excepted) seems particularly interested in talking about Zorn anymore.
Efren replied:
I AM!
Apologies, Efren. I remember you talking about "IAO" and other stuff not that long ago and not getting many replies. I've been trying to come to terms with it myself. The long percussion track gets on my nerves and the metal track doesn't really fit IMHO, fun though it is. I think it destroys any mood that had been set by the previous music. If Zorn wants to do stuff like this why doesn't he properly record his band with Lombardo/Frith/Laswell? And speaking of lost line-ups, whatever happened to the Young Philadelphians?
Unfortunately, many listers cannot contribute to Zorn's live performances comments due to their geographic position. I guess we're unlucky in Spain, for example. (please, nobody mentions Live in Sevilla. Over 1.000km from where I live!)
Yes, but the point I was making is that I was surprised that Zorn - a notoriously uncompromising fellow - had agreed to perform a work that he admitted on stage that he didn't like performing. I hoped that someone might respond along the lines of either (a) hey! He got paid. You bought a ticket. Deal with it,or (b) Even with composers of his pulling power, promoters still hold the upper hand, or even (c) something I hadn't thought of before. But the silence was deafening. Apparently I didn't put the words "Ornette Coleman" anywhere in there (ducks for cover). Alastair -- Personalised email by http://another.com
