Neues Kabarett at the Brecht Forum presents Roy Campbell 50th birthday concert and celebration with William Parker bass, Daniel Carter horns, Gerald Cleaver drums
Saturday September 21 at 9 pm $8 door 122 W. 27th St., 10th floor Manhattan
The best example of omnipresent trumpet masters virtuosity is his seamless readings of saxophone lines in Shades and Colors of Trane, one of the many bands he fronts. To replicate a master like John Coltrane is a remarkable achievement; to translate Tranes sheets of sound to the 3-key trumpet, as Campbell does, is simply amazing.
The band also carries the warmth that can be absent in repertory bands, the spirit Campbell also brings to Other Dimensions in Music, the Pyramid Trio or his work with an all-star list of jazz players, including William Parker, Jemeel Moondoc, Cecil Taylor, Billy Bang, Sun Ra, Henry Threadgill and David Murray.
The Neues Kabarett concert series at the Brecht Forum is proud to honor Roy Campbell with a special concert marking his 50th birthday. Expect an evening of special guests, stellar music and Mr. Campbells trumpet and flugelhorn, and maybe some flutes and whistles.
Neues Kabarett has presented a monthly series of avant-garde/free-jazz and experimental music concerts for close to 4 years. We seek to create performing opportunities for established and emerging artists (sometimes involving visual artists, dancers and poets as well as musicians) and develop the viability and visibility of new performance spaces. NK is a volunteer-run collective.
The Brecht Forum is a place for people who are working for fundamental social change and a new culture that puts human needs first. Within its loft in central Manhattan, the BF offers a year-round program of classes, lectures and seminars, art exhibitions, performances, popular education workshops and language classes.
Planned upcoming Neues Kabarett events:
September 27, 2002 - Matt Lavelle October 5, 2002 - Joe Morris & Rob Brown -30-
