To my earrs, the late group created a striking, singular sound and maintained it for a few short, incandescent years. And yes, while a great many musicians did sit in with the band in its not-quite-final years, on record the quartet/quintet is emphasized to great advantage.
But since Skip has already reservations on the regular Impulse! quartet, nobody should be surprised by his position on the late period (which even die hard Coltrane fans have reservations on). Anyway, there is a thread on rec.bluenote announcing a 2xCD of A LOVE SUPREME (the complete session, I would guess, with Art Davis and Archie Shepp). I will definitely jump on it and I am pretty sure that I will love it. Patrice.
