Any Shostakovich fans out there if you want something a little more intimate and intense I cannot recommend the cycle of 15 string quartets highly enough.

I have just been working my way through them and they are a preferable option to the large scale works in my opinion.

I have the decca box with the Fitzwilliam String Quartet which is quite a good buy. In fact this particular group premiered D Shos's late quartets in the west and are very highly regarded.
