Tom and all, Sorry, I don't think I was very clear--I was asking about the new Apple lossless format that Jeff Hobbs mentioned, as my friends and I have had problems with mp3 files on copied cd's that we try to play on a component cd player. Jeff posted me off-list and said it shouldn't make any difference if one burns a cd using AIFF or mp3 format, that the sound and "play-ability" should be the same, but several people have said they notice a difference in sound quality between the two formats, and we also have had this problem with playing (I use Memorex or TDK--I've had too many problems with students losing work due to shitty Imation disks). I've had no problems with AIFF files, sound-wise or function-wise, on any cd player. They sound just as you say, like the original. Thanks, kelley On Jul 12, 2004, at 11:24 AM, Tom Bowden wrote:
Kelley,
I've been burning CDs on an Apple for about 6 months now and can hear no difference between the original disc and the copies I make using AIFF. I can play the discs with equally satisfying results on my home computer (Apple), work computer (IBM clone using Windows Media Player and, before that, WinAmp), my car, and my stereo system. I have, however, discovered that "Imation"-brand discs will not play in my car or in my work computer.
I know nothing, unfortunately, about mpegs.
Best, Tom Bowden

Jeff,
Will cd's burned using the new Apple format play in component or car cd players? I've been importing cd's to burn using AIFF, and importing stuff for the iPod using mpeg format. Plus the sound seems much better (when played on something besides the Mac or iPod) using AIFF--is that not true with the new format?
Thanks, kelley
