Frankly, I think, Herbie's tired of doing the acoustic stuff. He brought his Headhunters clan to the Fillmore in March, and his performance that night, made you feel like you got your monies worth.
This kind of thing has been said before, and Herbie always manages to show up somewhere and play something just magical (check out his soloing on DOUBLE RAINBOW, the Joe Henderson album of a few yrs back, where he's clearly in the mood and in the moment). For that matter, Brecker has played -- throughout his career -- some heart-stopping shit as well. But my attitude towards pretty much all of these Miles tributes is that very few of them sound inspired because so few few of them are doing anything other than what people were doing anyway, which was to play tunes his bands recorded in a head/solos/head style. But you can get more attention if you put MILES DAVIS in the press release and on the cover. I swear, Miles is becoming to jazz radio what Motown is to oldies radio. sh http://www.skipheller.com (the new and improved website)
