Vandermark's albums (particularly V5) tend to be a bit insipid, especially in contrast to their live shows. Jeb Bishop just shines throughout, despite having almost two 6 packs the night I saw them. Rempis, Daisy, and Kessler all have their inspired moments during a set. Vandermark really was not the main attraction and I think he realized that fact. He stepped back, taking fewer solos. His leadership and charts (yes, much of it is written...though you wouldn't tell from the playing) really make the group gel. They don't play like a group of talented individuals; they play like a cohesive group. This is what makes them such a pleasure to see live. I can't see the albums reflecting this at all. Pardon my English this morning...ugh. I can't say I'm a KV fan at all (contrarily, I think he's one of the most overrated jazz musicians today) but I remember buying an Okka limited edition of the FME trio, whose lineup I can't remember right now but it was sax-bass-drums, and it was pretty good. However, I always tend be unimpressed by Vandermark, at least in terms of innovation- he's too nostalgic to be regarded the great jazz hope, imho. As to Satoko Fujii, there's a very good album by her regular trio called "Looking Out of the Window" on Nippon Crown. It might well be the trio's best recording together with "Kitsune-bi". Her albums with the orchestras I find them too spacious and dispersed in comparison. I think she works better in small-ensemble settings and her orchestras, despite the promising line-ups, are far from "small" and I feel a certain lack of focus there. It seems that the latest orchestra album on Enja, "Future of the Past" is pretty good, though. The other day I listened her first album on duo with Paul Bley and it's quite good as well, but what I'm really looking forward to get in the mail is her album on Victo with Tatsuya Yoshida. Pardon my English today... ufff Best, Efrén del Valle
Both of these guys are coming to London, so I'll want to take advantage of the cheaper CDs they'll be bringing with them.
Satoko Fujii: I've got both the Quartet albums and 3 (Kitsune-Bi, Toward, To West and Bell the Cat) Trio albums. Can you any Z-listers recommend any of her other stuff. I'd particularly like to know about her Orchestras.
Ken Vandermark: I know the Vandermark 5 and the Territory Band, but this time he's coming over with School Days. Any thoughts on this group (I know the rhythm section from other CDs) and any of KV's other recordings?
Cheers
Dave.
