I've got Pateras' album but I didn't know his previous work. It's such a complex recording and I'm pretty sure it requires repeated listenings to (try to) grasp it but, as you say, it's certainly chaotic. I was gladly surprised that the guy approaches this kind of percussion-electronics interaction, which might have turned into an impenetrable academic thing, with a good sense of humor. There's even a piece on the album that was intended to appear as totally ridiculous, and it is indeed!! So far, I've enjoyed the percussion-only compositions quite a bit but I still need to absorb the rest. The problem is finding the time to do so. I'm looking forward to the new Anthony Pateras CD on Tzadik. His last two CDs on Melbourne, Australia labels as well as his live performances have been wonderful explorations of prepared piano and electroacoustic improv. His style can be chaotic and explosive. So I'm glad Tzadik are releasing his new one.
