Hello- Hi,
Could anyone give me some good recommendations of musicians who play the pocket trumpet besides Don Cherry and Einar(sp) Orn of the Sugarcubes?
One that I've been listening to a lot recently is Roy Campbell, an excellent trumpeter. If my memory serves, you can find him on pocket in Matthew Shipp's "Pastoral Composure" and his Pyramid Trio (w/William Parker & Hamid Drake) album "Ethnic Stew and Brew". He's been compared to Lee Morgan for his fondness of the higher registers of his instrument. Campbell's mainly a melodic musician but if you want some more aggressive performances, check Peter Brötzmann's "From Valley to Valley" where he joins the Die Like a Dog Quartet if I'm not wrong (he's played with Brötzmann but could be another album). Last week I asked for opinions on Campbell's "It's Krunch-time" on Thirsty Ear but the overall opinion was "good but..." so I passed on.
Also, anyone have thoughts on the Don Cherry >album "Orient"? I am prompted to purchase it through Aquarius after reading their praise of it.....
Is it a double album with one Cd recorded live and the other a studio recording? If so, I listened to it quite a while ago but I remember the sound was pretty bad although the music was fine. If you don't have "Complete Communion" (Blue Note) I think it's a highly recommendable album by Cherry. Hope it helps. Best, Efrén del Valle n.p: Beatles "Sgt. Peppers" ___________________________________________________ Yahoo! Sorteos Consulta si tu número ha sido premiado en Yahoo! Sorteos http://loteria.yahoo.es
