I always took for granted that the "Smile" album was given up by Brian Wilson after months of work and that some of those tracks were re-recorded and included in "Smiley Smile".
Correct.
I have read, though, that a "Smile Sessions" box set was released in the late eighties or early nineties. I've never seen that box set in the stores here, nor have I heard about someone owning it in my area.
There is a 'Pet Sounds' box, with lots of outtakes from the 'Pet Sounds' album, plus there is another box celebrating 30 years (I think) of Beach Boys music. That's the box that contains some 'Smile' material.
However, a month ago I found a vinyl copy of "Smile"
'Smile' has been extensively bootlegged. I own at least 4 different versions of it. The album you found is obviously a boot. I'm not sure, but I wouldn't be surprised if a bootleg 'Smile' box exists.
