A gander at the recent Forced Exposure or Anomalous lists shows dozens if not hundreds of small labels releasing music by people who, if not unknown, are only known within a similar niche to many of the artists we discuss. How do we know that some of these aren't started by people who made it big five years ago? If *I* wound up with a few million dollars, I could certainly spread it around without any promotion or advertisement. As long as we're on the thread of the Hat Cobra recordings, let me put in a small recommendation for anyone who doesn't already have them. The live disc has some vocal comments by JZ, and enough long excerpts to see how the piece evolves, plus a collection of great musicians. I've been listening to the Tzadik Cobra today, and I could swear there's a guitar in there somewhere (other than Derek Bailey). It's nice that there's a number of good Cobra recordings out there, it definitely gives a sense of the range of the piece. -- Caleb Deupree cdeupree@erinet.com
