IMO, the Jazzmaster is a good balance beetween the Fender Jaguar (low input, terrible trebble and attack, perfect for surf music but limited for other applications) and the suitable-for-everything Stratocaster. It has a real personality (even the recent and EVEN the japanese), from surf-style to jazz thanks to its heavy sounding bottom mike (yet it failed on the jazz player market).
However the conception of the vibrato system and strings fixation may have been a little bit too complicated, and it's difficult to get a good set up (most I've tried unplugged sometimes sound like a sitar), but I think the result (marvelous vibrato sound) is worth the technical difficulties, I wouldn't trade my Jazzmaster for any Strato.
Hope this can be of any help
