Would any of you be so kind as to rec a "guide" of sorts? For example i saw a reasonably priced Penguin Guide to Jazz at a nearby record shop recently. Is this a reasonably reliable source?....I imagine i would get alot out of something like that.
When I was getting into jazz for the first time, and still, the Morton/Cook PENGUIN GUIDE TO JAZZ was/is indispensable. The various editions don't necessarily supersede one another completely, as earlier editions cover some vinyl and labels that don't get much play in later editions. Morton/Cook are absolutely partial and sometimes eccentric, always opinionated, but incredibly knowledgeable and seldom glib or dismissive. I also enjoyed the one-volume first edition of the Rough Guide to World Music, which is fairly well-balanced between record guide and world traditional/popular musics primer. It's now swelled to two volumes, though I haven't checked it out yet. -----s np: Brahms, PIANO CONCERTO NO. 2 (Serkin/Cleveland/Szell)....thanks, list! __________________________________________________ Do you Yahoo!?
