I don't think the Beatles created that mindset -- they were always giving it up to Elvis, The Everly's, Motown and other non-writing artists etc -- but more the press, who decided to make rock'n'roll people into youth emissaries. The Beatles probably saved rock'n'roll for a time -- look at the charts before they showed up and tell me that we'd have been better off with "It's My Party" than "Ticket To Ride". But I think those kind of blanket statements -- "The Beatles ruined rock" or "Elvis invented rock" or anything else of the sort -- turn into accusation aimed at people who really didn't do the thing of which they're being accused.
