Not that I disagree with your post, but just thought I'd point out that Mike Patton's Bacharach cover is very very similar to the original...

I don't really think that "Great Jewish Music: Burt Bacharach" represents a meaningful example of the Tzadik catalogue or that it should discourage anyone to keep on investigating. Furthermore, i think that most of the covers there are really twisting the originals in a very clever way. Take Dave Douglas, Marc Ribot or Mike Patton's as examples. And yes, some forgettable spots like the Quine/Cole collaboration. If you find this prescindible, you haven't heard the Marc Bolan release...
