Ah, yeah. I was there, and it was a trip. As I recall, it wasn't a solo gig but a duo gig with John Berndt. The event, at a small coffeehouse, was booked as "jazz". When the owner called in, and heard, rather than Kenny G, gentle smeerpy noises, he ordered the show stopped and the performers ejected. They left, and the entire crowd at the packed coffeehouse followed. They finished the show at an outdoor monument across the street. (Cops asked them to stop due to noise regulations, though, to their credit, they didn't barrel in but waited until the end of a piece to approach the musicians, who complied peacefully.) ----- Original Message ----- From: "Dan Given" <dan.given@ualberta.ca> To: <zorn-list@lists.xmission.com> Sent: Friday, March 21, 2003 7:24 AM Subject: Re. Bhob Rainey
"After a controversial 1998 solo concert in Washington D. C. attracted a considerable amount of attention to Rainey's music." (from the AMG). Does any one know what was so controversial about? Was it just the music or were there other circumstances that made it controversial? Thanks.

I seem to remember reading (somewhere, maybe rec.music.bluenote before its death) about this. There was something about Rainey being booked into a restaurant-type venue, and the owner decided after he started playing that he hated it and kicked him out. Rainey and the people who were there to hear him left, and went to a nearby park and...can't remember for sure, but I there was something about illegal gathering, or noise, or something like that.
It wasn't a Guns and Roses type riot when Rainey showed up late, if that's what you were hoping for!
