OK, here goes: 2003 original releases (in no order and I'm sure I'm forgetting some) King Crimson - The Power to Believe (what a comeback, ranks among their best) Robert Wyatt - Cuckooland Richard Thompson - The Old Kit Bag Tim Berne - The Sublime And... Vandermark 5 - Airports For Light (includes some of my favorite all-time Vandermark compositions) Rickie Lee Jones - The Evening of My Best Day The Roots - Phrenology Drive By Truckers - Decoration Day (got this by accident through BMG, but damned if I didn't play it constantly for about 2 weeks) Reissues Joni Mitchell - The Complete Geffen Recordings box set (this period has been undeservedly ignored. Night Ride Home, in particular, sits comfortably alongside her incredible mid-70s work) Andrew Hill - Passing Ships (mind-blowing. Big band sessions from 1969, released from the Blue Note vaults for the first time. Incredible that this was allowed to languish for 30+ years unheard. This may be my favorite Hill recording.) Beach Boys - Smile Albert Ayler - Nuits de la Foundation Maeght 1970 and Copenhagen Tapes (these two were actually released in 2002) Robert Wyatt - Solar Flares For You In addition to the Spotlight artists and my recommendations of the month, in 2003 I listened to a lot of: Joni Mitchell Bob Dylan Howling Wolf Wilson Pickett Willie Nelson Roxy Music Tim Berne Bill Monroe Dan Hicks and His Hot Licks Sun Ra __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!?
