Is it that time of the year again? =) Since the semi-annual Zornlist Summer Reading List thread hasn't started, I'll get the ball rolling this year. So here's a list of stuff I hope to get to read (in alphabetical order): - Jake Arnott's "The Long Firm" - Mark Danielewski's "House of Leaves" - Samuel Delany's "Dhalgren" - M. Gira's "The Consumer" - Iain Sinclair's "White Chappell, Scarlet Tracings" So, which should I read first? =) And something for your reading lists: Alan Moore's novel "Voice of the Fire" -- a secret history, told in interrelated vignettes, of some section of England that I can't remember. =) "Voice of the Fire" is equal parts Russell Hoban, Peter Ackroyd, T.E.D. Klein (and, I'm told, Sinclair) -- and, of course, Moore's previous work (particularly "From Hell" and "Promethea"). Later, Ben p.s. "Whity" and "Pioneers in Ingoldstadt" are out on Fantoma, "Querelle" is out on Columbia, and "The Merchant of Four Seasons" and "Fox and His Friends"" will be released this month. I don't the distributor, but the video rights for these two and the three mentioned in the message below are owned by New Yorker Films, who told me years ago that Fox Lorber had bought up the rights for their Fassbinder films. I have been searching for news of the 2002 Fassbinder retrospective that Ulli Lommel mentions on his commentary to "Whity" (20th anniversary of F's death?), but maybe this got shelved? If you find out more info, I'd love to hear more. Reading Matter

I used to have Mojo in the bathroom but I can't afford it anymore..... And I never get through all the Time Out New Yorks in there as it is. (I like torturing myself with all the listings of shows I'm missing.) I'm partway through John Kruth's Rahsaan Roland Kirk book, which has lots of interesting interviews with musicians but might have been organized better. I just started Mahfouz's "Palace Walk," loved "The Beginning and the End" which I picked up after someone here recommended "Akhenaten," which the library didn't have. My thanks to whoever mentioned Mahfouz in the first place, his characters are so real and engrossing. I'm hoping the library will get the reissue of "Terrible Thunder," a book on the Howard Johnson fire/shootout here in New Orleans a couple decades ago. A friend said it's the first book he ever read in one sitting -- of course, he does know some of the folks who were involved, but I understand it is a pretty interesting look at the racial and social politics of the time as well as a gripping account of events. A previous posted mentioned that these were released on Ruscico. I've never seen these in the US, and the last I heard was that Criterion and Ruscico were fighting over who owned the rights to these movies. There is a Tarkovsky fan site that I would look up for you if I had a faster connection (www.skywalking.com/....) that should have more information.
