On the radio this afternoon I heard a jaw-dropping archival bit where a white interviewer keeps pestering, in a condenscending way, McTell to play some "complaining songs" though McTell insists he doesn't know any. The interviewer tosses out an example that includes the n-word (twice) while McTell keeps saying things in the South are bad for all people. Anybody know the source of this exchange? The DJ barely mentioned the song titles. Tsahar/Kowald/Murray at the Miró Foundation

Hi, Here go some thoughts on the concert from yesterday evening at the MirÃ³ Foundation in Barcelona. The relatively small room that held the concert yesterday evening was surprisingly full (even a couple of 10-year-old kids fooling around with small The Maxx-figures in hand!). Murray, Kowald and Tsahar started their attack around 8.30pm after being introduced by Spanish pianist AgustÃ FernÃ¡ndez. Those (like me) who were expecting material similar to that featured in the ÂOpen SystemsÂ album (PK/AT/Hamid Drake/Hugh Ragin), that is, free-jazz with an unmistikable Ayler/Ornette flavour- where very wrong. The show took off with Tsahar blowing really hard from the very beginning, Kowald providing an astonishing variety of extended techniques combining finger and bowed playing, and Murray playing really soft, just trying to punctuate the great sax/double-bass interaction. Throughout the performance I couldnÂt see the legendary drummer fit very well into the environment that Tsahar and Kowald were creating. There were even times where the two musicians had to warn Murray not to interrupt their solos. Murray seemed much more concerned with his own impulse rather than contributing to the interplay of his mates. He accompanied his sometimes fierce free drumming (combining sticks and mallets) with a constant humming and even singing at some given moments. Kowald was delightful with his array of unorthodox techniques, enjoying the show and above all, entertaining. Tsahar was the big surprise for me. I had only listened to him in ÂOpen SystemsÂ and in Susie IbarraÂs ÂFlower After FlowerÂ, but the strength of his playing was virtually spitted right into our face yesterday. His sax/bass clarinet lines were so long and he blew so hard that during his breaks he seemed to retch due to the effort. Ayler, BrÃ¶tzmann, Coleman, Lyons and the rawest Murray came to my mind when seeing the young Tsahar squeeze his horn like a possessed. IÂm expecting anything new coming from this guy. The concert was a one hour and a half free improvisation, no breaks, no concessions to melody or anything slightly similar and an appalling collective sound. They had no mercy and I swear I even felt a bit dizzy after the concert. Tzadik pricing, cultural imperialism

As a retailer, I can tell you that Tzadik titles are pretty expensive at the wholesale level, about 20% higher than comparable labels. They're still cheaper than frontline major label titles - remember that the next time some major labels are merging and they claim economies of scale will benefit consumers. Tzadik is a very prolific label, and I'd guess titles like "Bar Kokhba," are carrying the weight of less popular titles. I don't think their prices are silly, though, since the quality tends to be high, the design is well-done, and I'd have a hard time staying mad at anyone who put out that Dion McGregor CD. As for charging extra for extra discs, it's pretty common, though I'm certainly pleased when the label chooses to charge little or nothing extra for another disc or two. I thought the cultural imperialism thread had died a merciful death. But since it has not, isn't Zorn as much a cultural imperialist as Madonna? Chris Selvig

This is definitely not true. IÂ´ve attended dozens of european festivals (Moers, Saalfelden, Ulrichsberg, Wels...) and nowhere is the average distance of visitors as high as in Nickelsdorf. thanks for the review! First, a clarification on my last post. I do NOT think that the US government is involved in a deliberate OVERT plot to destroy a culture. AND, I do NOT think that the US has no culture. BUT, it seems possible that saying US having no culture is a device to imply that the US has no cultural colonialist practices. How can we be supplanting local cultures if we have none?
