He was 87. Maceda's death at 10 p.m. Wednesday came a week after National Artist for literature Nick Joaquin died due to cardiac arrest. His remains will be brought to the Abelardo Hall at the University of the Philippines in Diliman, Quezon City, where he taught piano and ethnomusicology from 1952 to 1990. Maceda was proclaimed a National Artist in 1997. His acclaimed compositions include Ugma-ugma (1963), Pagsamba (1968), and Udlot-udlot (1975). Zorn book...

I appreciate your words of encouragement (Craig & Efren), but you see...first and foremost, I am a musician. Not an author. I am also an alto saxophonist, who very much like Zorn, is a composer of many different styles of music. So, I know how it feels to be misunderstood in a lot of musical ways. THAT is the LAST thing I would want to do to Zorn. My personal opinion is that if you take the time to listen to this man's work...and I mean "really" listen, then you start to feel wrong if you write anything that may be taken and misconstrued. So, in short...I started transcribing the sax parts to Masada tunes, because it spoke to me. Then came the trumpet and bass, etc. Then Naked City, then Filmworks volumes, and the Gift, etc... And this was strictly for the hell of it at the time. Then I decided to get a bunch of musicians together and give a 2-night dedication to his music, called "Zornography: The music of John Zorn," and this is what really opened my mind and ears. Anybody can just listen to it, and few can "really" listen to it, but when you play it, and you rehearse it, and analyze the hell out of it, things start to make sense, patterns of logic start to come to the forefront, when you rehearse the bass part with another part (for example). So, now...after having this "Zornographic Enlightenment," I am really wanting to write a book (in which I have only started), but make it as close as possible to the purest, truest Zorn perspective imaginable...which is impossible...but I'm merely hoping to come close. side note...for anybody wanting to come down to Tuscaloosa, AL in late Nov./ early Dec., I'm organizing "Zornography II." When I first bought cd "Taboo and Exile", the cd cover contained an shocking hiden photo of a young girl while she's performing the act of masturbation. The new edition shows only detailed fingers but I heard there are some different variations. He's not going to agree with a lot of it, and why worry, since music is such a subjective thing to deal with in the first place... Book about Zorn

I bought this Book "Sonora" while ago in Geneva. I think this is very objective document that contains some very interasting interviews, photos from Zorn's private colections (some photos from his school days)and three really great essays Zorn wrote about sound in Sam Fuller's "Shock Corridor", about Jean Vigo's "L' Atlante" and about Jack Smith's "Flamming Creatures". This book also contains one ,single like, cd that represent some early works with Eugene Chadbourne. Here you'll find not so new but detailed discography, bibliography, filmography etc etc. I recomend this book to anyone (If you can still find it), but hope something new will come out soon. RE: book about Zorn

Iza, I'm currently working on one (a book) about Zorn. But, of course, if he doesn't approve my "prototype" (if you will), then I probably won't release it. I have a good number of transcriptions (that I worked on by myself), and am trying to use certain passages of these to explain his "blocks of sound," etc. and his nod to Stallings, Ives, Herrmann, Morricone, etc. Zorn means so much to me, that I think more people need to find out about him. But on the other hand, the searching and finding out yourself is part of the adventure. So my book doesn't give it all away, it still leaves plenty of mystery. Besides...Zorn is ever-changing anyway. So, within a month, it would be ancient history to what his current ideas are presently. (If by any chance you read this post...thanks SO much for introducing me to Zorn's music Rob...for that, I am ALWAYS in debt to you.) Listen and don't look, ---Nathan p.s.
