Briggan Krauss

One of my favorite sax players, alto or otherwise. Such a swaggering sound, and he really listens to other players, rather than just blowing. I wish he did more as a leader -- his gig w/ 300 (trio w/ Kenny Wollesen and Wayne Horvitz) at the Knitting Factory festival (or whatever they were calling it) in 1998 or so was just amazing. The album was very good, too. I also liked Good Kitty a lot. Wasn't wild about his solo foray into electronica, however. Parry

Zorn's Sax Playing

Personally, I feel Zorn has a unique style and I've got to give him kudos for pushing the boundaries with the sax on albums such as (any Pain Killer album here). Is he Coltrane or Joshua Redman? No, but I wouldn't want him to be either. He's his own man, with his own voice and that's what makes his sax appealing to me. Besides greatness is forever in the eye of the beholder. Hi, I love Zorn's playing in Masada, Naked City and many other places, but in a more impro setting, he often gets boring and repetitive. Especially in bands like Painkiller, where he jsut does the same wail again and again and again...... skerik the sax man

Gotta love all the love for saxophonists around here. Skerik is a MUST see in terms of his live performance. I really love Ponga, Wayne Horvitz's band with Skerik, Dave Palmer and Bobby Previte. Also, Skerik was in a prog-punk bad (is that a good description???) called Sad-Happy. Very good stuff. Sad-Happy is a drum & bass duo (real drums and a real bass) that bring in different "third members." The last two albums they produced featured Micheal Manering (sic). Skerik's also been playing with REM's Peter Buck in Tuatara. I've never been able to get into 'em, but it is quality song writing. matt PS Zorn is not as good a musician as Joey Baron!!!!! Skerik is a sax player? Put Zorn and Skerik on a bandstand together, and my money is on Zorn all the way. Although I haven't seen Skerik criticize anyone in an audience, I have witnessed him several times saying some pretty awful things from the bandstand about fellow musicians. I guess what I was trying to say was that his solos at the recent Masada gig tended to end up, peak, at the same place. And listening to him circular breath on a single high note just reminded me of Roscoe's tour de force earlier that week. I've never stopped loving Zorn the arranger and composer but as a player I think my favorite recordings are back in the day a la Sonny Clark Memorial Quartet, News for Lulu & Spillane. And please don't throw me out of the kitchen. I've led the Sonic Life forever and wouldn't have a clue how to function without the noise. There is a saying among studio guys that there are no bad microphones but only wrong microphones with respect to the task, and I guess the same thing can be said on amplification techniques. Where solid state amps simply become more precise as the quality of components rises, valve amps by construction affect the sound. The closer you get to full weight , the more the signal is compressed, i.e. dynamic peaks are suppressed while the basic level rises. This is often a highly wanted effect because you increase the ceteris paribus loudness or punch or fatness of a signal. Valves also affect the frequency spectrum, i.e. function as a sort of equalizer, often so in a way to make the signal sound more round and balanced. Also, valves have a natural distortion, again depending from weight. It is sometimes useful to get a valve into a transistor signal chain which sounds too "digital", too "sterile", too "clean". However, if you have a CD where the mixer took benefit of expensive valve technique to get the "perfect" amount of compression, equalization and distortion for each track and for the master, there is initially no need not to use a good and precise (and cheap and long life) transistor amp chain including the low level amps in the CD player and pre and power amps outside. But of course a properly driven valve amp can also produce quite a linear frequency response. With respect to the Theremin issue, I'd recommend to proceed like the common guitar or electric bass player: try both and decide if you like the characteristic valve sound or if you are more impressed by transistor directness.
