Dave Douglas Septet live in Italy

Hi everyone on the list last Sunday I went to Quarrata Italy to see new Dave Douglas septet playing at Teatro Nazionale. The show was great. Dave was in wonderful mouth shape and inspiration. I havent heard yet Freak In but I think the set was entirely taken from the work. Jamie Saft electric piano texture was simply excellent. Ikue Mori noise disturbances added the right extra eerie smell to the most linear passages. The rhythmic section was just fine. Never heard of Seamus Blake and the guy just kicks! Great unisons with Dave and a couple of breathtaking solos. A bit overwhelming for my tastes the guitar artistry of Mr Gilmore but the guy works really well. Dave had some sincere and very touching words of sympathy for the Florence balcony exposure of Rainbow Peace Flags and asked for the deepest commitment for the anti war campaign. I have seen The Ex four times last month. I enjoyed all concerts, although I thought the Paradiso-concert was the least good, but maybe that was because of bad sound quality (they did play a great cover of Konono however!). They only played new songs, except "Uitgeest", which they played as encore. I quite like the new songs and Rozemarie's playing. I wasn't really a major fan of the previous "Dizzy Spells" album, but this however is a great progression. Don't miss them. They will be touring in USA later this year. P.S. I also was minus 3 years old when The Ex played their first concert. Well, They were still punk-wannabes anyway. Kris np- Spem in Alium (Tallis)

Hi, Some time ago there were some rumours about a Sonic Youth/Brigitte Fontaine thing on SYR. I wonder if someone knows if there was any truth to these rumours... hi I cought the Ex live a month ago in a small club of the squat-scene in Amsterdam, OCCII. The gig was part of a series of warm-up gigs preceding apeparences in bigger venues in Holland and soon around Europe. I was a bit sceptical about the new line-up and how would the doublebass of Rozemarie blend in. And mostly, would some of the magic sound of the T.Cora cello-days be recovered? Rozemarie has been associated with the Ex in a way, having performed duo-improvisations with Terrie (very beautiful BTW, check their "fiets" CD). I think she has also been in the Ex Orkest at some point. So, the concert was a blast! They looked really revamped and happy to play together, Luc was indeed smiling from the audience. The sound was a little bit closer to the sound that they had with T.Cora present, especially when Rozemarie was using her bow. Her sound was overall full and blended greatly. So, no worries! New songs are being prepared for an upcoming album, even though Terrie says it might take some time. In the meantime a CD will be released documenting their tour with Han Bennink in Ethiopia, check their website www.theex.nl for details and upcoming dates. manolis PS: to contribute to the SY discussion, of course "Sister" is their best release. Powerful, magic, trance music. Beauty lies in the eye. An intense personal experience listening to it, was in a car, on the way back from a tiring hiking holiday, late at night through Belgium with heavy rain (surprise!). Of course none else in the car appreciated it, but for me it was a revelation! Also I found the CD of EX/ICP/SY very very good. It lives up to the potential of the combined parts and manages to really capture the feeling of seeing them live with a similar line-up a day before the recording.

Charles Mingus Big Band/Elvis Costello Tickets

All: Due to my overzealousness a friend of mine and I both ordered tickets for the May 3 Costello/Mingus show at Bard College (located north of Manhattan). So now we have two extra tickets. Anyone interested in these? If so, please contact me privately. Row G on the side, right on the aisle. (That's row 7 to you and me.) Seats 11, 13. $65 each, and no "convenience" fees! FACE VALUE. Need I remind you that this will be a very unique show? Or that the Mingus Big Band is a world-class outfit and that Elvis has composed lyrics for many of Mingus's compositions? Or that the show will more than likely feature big band arrangements of quite a few Costello tunes? (This might be important to you Costello fans out there.)
