Not jazz (but what is?): Does anybody remember a couple of great psychedelic country albums on Columbia by a Canadian duo, Fraser and DeBolt? - that would be Allan Fraser and Daisy DeBolt, and one album featured a fiddle player, Ian somebody. Haven't heard them in many(25-30?) years, Daisy still plays, I guess, but it was some chemistry with them then. If anybody's holding one of those old LPs and can burn, we gotta talk. Dan

If by 'No New York' you mean the Brian Eno-produced New York no-wave compilation, that came out on Japanese CD last year or thereabouts. Granted, it's usually stupid expensive (the lowest price at gemm.com is $33.20, the highest $57.34), but it's out there. Mondo Kim's in the East Village stocks it, though it's not on their website. The only source that froogle.com brings up is CDconnection.com, which carries it for $37.46. If you mean something else (I don't know nuthin' about Henson Cargill), then don't mind me. Bob<< I saw it performed live in San Francisco in January as I mentioned before with Hank Roberts, Jenny Scheinman, and Eyvind Kang. Best music Frisell has done since Roberts used to be in his band. Beautiful soulful playing from all, you couldn't ask for a better lineup. As for the cd, I can't afford it either, although Amazon has it for $80+. You'd have to really want the art book to pay that much. I wonder if anyone taped the show or wouldn't mind (gasp) burning the cd. Cheers, John

Oddly enough, my copy didn't arrive either. I read it at a newsstand. I won't spoil it for you too much, because you really do need to read it to believe that it actually happened. But as I recall, it was called "Putting the White Man in Charge," and sneeringly posited that Douglas is so much more "important" than Crouch's favorite trumpeters (such as Nicholas Payton and Terence Blanchard, either of whom could reduce Douglas to a "puddle" if they were on the same bandstand) because he brought in hip Balkan influences and other Euro-oriented elements. I think the secondary broadsides against Byron and Mark Turner were something to the effect of their overt intellectualism making them more palatable to white critics. Francis Davis also comes in for ad hominem attack, and Stanley gets to display once more his complete and utter ignorance and intolerance towards hip-hop. All that in just one column! Honestly, it was such a disgusting display that were I still writing for the magazine, I'd quit. But that wasn't necessary. There's a rumor afloat that Stanley has since been "fired," but honestly, isn't that more than a bit like closing the barn door after the horse's ass has escaped?
