Beefheart Box

The Beefheart box set is really cool. Discs 1,2 & 5 contain the most interesting music, with discs 3 & 4 being interesting in a historical sense. The booklet that accompanies the box set is great reading and I heartily recommend it. Since last night, I've made it through discs "0," 1, 2 and 3. The sound quality is exceptional throughout, in some cases surprisingly so (location recordings), in other cases not so surprising (TV and radio recordings). Remastering is up to Revenant's usual high standard, and I've already commented on the staggeringly sumptuous packaging (in which every item in the box has some kind of historic or symbolic value). The performances have been nothing less than enlightening, and I can fairly say I've heard aspects of Ayler's ensemble music that I've never noticed before (including one instance of a Bo Diddley beat rising up through the maelstrom. Already, I can tell I'll be spending a LOT of time with this one, and that's something you can't always say for a box set. Steve P.S. What I refer to as disc "0" is a previously unannounced bonus disc that contains two brief performances by Ayler as a part of an Army big band. Very conventional charts and performances, but you can still hear the germ of something special in Ayler's own playing.

I just got my copy this week. It is absolutely beautiful! The release date is October 4 and Revenant is planning some events to celebrate the release. Events are being planned in Austin, NYC and Marfa Texas! Revenant is working on an Ornette set. A bunch of music has been gathered and Ornette and Denardo are still mulling it over. It could be awhile... You will probably see other Revenant projects before the completion of the Coleman box. The Ayler box contains a very nice hardbound book edited by Ben Young. It is great to see this kind of care taken in assessing Ayler's work. I think it will do a lot to raise the profile of improvised music and free jazz. I've been told that considerable care was taken to keep the production costs very low so the box would be affordable. As always the byram design is topnotch. This record is an ear assault.
